Summary

Winner of the Carnegie Prize 2011

‘War,’ says the Mayor, ‘at last.’ Three armies march on New Prentisstown, each one intent on destroying the others. Todd and Viola are caught in the middle, with no chance of escape. As the battles commence, how can they hope to stop the fighting? How can there ever be peace when they’re so hopelessly outnumbered? And if war makes monsters of men, what terrible choices await? But then a third voice breaks into the battle, one bent on revenge….

The electrifying finale to the award-winning Chaos Walking trilogy, Monsters of Men is a heart-stopping novel about power, survival, and the devastating realities of war.

Really impressive ending and great narration.

Again, the narration is fantastic by humphrey bower, he is the best I've come across for narration, each character immediately clear.

The best description I can come up with for this trilogy is suggest you imagine the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy combined with the tone of 'The Road'.
That description is intended as a compliment as I enjoyed both of those immensely. Heartily recommend this trilogy.

Great performance

This narrator is excellent! He slips in and out of accents and voices confidently and seems to be immersed in the story he's telling.

The book itself was flagging a bit by the end. Too many moments when the baddie could kill the goodie or vice versa but the writer wants to spin it out for no plausible reason other than - apparently - to load in more tragedy, more cruelty and more impossible-dilemma-porn. The trilogy as a whole is very good and very original, even though it could use some shortening. Definitely recommended as a performance.

Boring..just get on with it

This was I think the third in a trilogy but when I downloaded it, I thought it was the second, so the first part made no sense. Frankly, I was really disappointed, particularly after I adored the first book so much. Audible, it was not clear at all that I was buying the 3rd book and I'm annoyed by this - you should make it very clear where a book comes in a series. All in all, I was bored by the very same characters who had captivated me in book one. I guess you can have too much of a good thing.

Bought all the books from this series and enjoyed them all, the characters are all well portrayed by the narrators.

Awesome!

This is a fantastic climax to the three book story and was so well read that I'll be seeking more by both this author and voice actor.

Disappointing third book

Perhaps my mistake lay in listening to all 3 books in the Chaos Walking trilogy back to back? By the third book I found that I really disliked the lead characters. I did have to keep reminding myself that they were children and so decision making processes were underdeveloped, they naively believed in the truthfulness of adults, that they were still learning life lessons, including morality and that their actions and choices had real world consequences and repercussions. My frustration lay in their inability to learn from situations and while children are naturally self-centred, their selfishness was, by the final acts of the story, frankly unbearable. Humphrey Bowers narration was generally excellent but, no fault of his, I found the endlessly repetitive "Violas", "boy colts" and "girl colts" of book 3 too much. I will be returning this book. :(
