Summary

Mrs McGinty died from a brutal blow to the back of her head. Suspicion fell immediately on her shifty lodger, James Bentley, whose clothes revealed traces of the victim’s blood and hair. Yet something was amiss: Bentley just didn’t look like a murderer.

Poirot believed he could save the man from the gallows – what he didn’t realise was that his own life was now in great danger…

Critic reviews

"The plot is perfect and the characters are wonderful." (San Francisco Chronicle)

"The best Poirot since such pre-war classics as Cards on the Table." (New York Times)

"So simple, so economical, so completely baffling. Every clue scrupulously given, with superb sleight of hand." (Sunday Times)

One of her best

Not as well known as 'orient express' or 'death on the Nile', but this book is one of her best with solid back story (where are they now) and excellent characterisations of all the residents at Broadhinney. Coupled with High Fraser's narration this is one of the best Christies I've download.

You can't go wrong with Agatha Christie. Time and again I return to her books (spoken or word) due to the timeless quality and appeal of her work.

Brilliant

This is my favourite Agatha Christie, Poirot, story. Whilst one suspects the murderer pretty quickly, the twists and turns and individuals stories are fascinating as they unfold.
Hugh Frasier's narration is superb. His vocal characterisations brilliant. I love his voice, and his range of accents etc is extraordinary. You could be listening to a play, he is so good.

Unhappy with recent edits

I'm a massive fan of Agatha Christie, I listen to her books a lot as I currently have sight problems and reading print books is difficult.
This is one of my favourite of the Poirot novels and Hugh Fraser is an excellent narrator. Full marks for the story and narration.

But I have a concern...I have listened to this recording a few times, I have just listened to it again and realised an edit has been made, in a discussion between Mrs Oliver and Robin Upward a reference to a character as a "pansy" has been removed. I really don't understand why. You can't remove every term that may be deemed as offensive from every book, that is just unecessary censorship.
To be honest I would like to listen to the "unabridged" Agatha Christie novel I purchased not an Audible edit.

Excellent

Another great Agatha Christie, plot perfect, characters wonderful (love Maureen Summerhayes and Mrs Oliver), satisfying end. Read by Hugh Frazer - the best.

Overly tangled plot but incredibly entertaining!

This has to be one of Christie's most complex & convoluted plots, but the quirky cast of characters make up for it. It's also a beautifully illustrated insight into the little England of 1952, heralding the death knell of the real class system.

Hugh Fraser's narration is flawless, seamlessly weaving between aged spinster to disgruntled shop girl with complete believability. Poirot is never more real or subtly nuanced than this.

Only annoyance is to audible for tagging their final credit so closely onto the end.. again!

Bit slow

Found this novel a bit slow and has a large cast of characters so I had to really pay attention. As usual narration was brilliant. Think Margaret Rutherford starred in Murder most Foul which is based on this book.

Great and Enjoyable.

This is a great story by Agatha Christie and superbly narrated by Hugh Fraser. Poirot is asked to prove a man is innocent of murder and is about to be hanged.
