The Deacon of an English Midlands village turns to sleuthing when a killer leaves a victim behind her husband’s pharmacy in this cozy mystery.

As a Deacon at St. Lawrence parish, Katerina Rowe enjoys a quiet life in the village of Eyam. But everything changes when she discovers the body of a man and a badly beaten woman in the alleyway behind her husband’s pharmacy. Kat is immediately drawn to Beth, the young woman she saved. But in order to keep her safe, Kat finds herself embroiled in a baffling mystery.

When Beth’s house is set on fire, Kat offers the young woman sanctuary in her home. Soon the pair begin investigating the murder, with some help from Beth’s feisty grandmother, Doris. Neither the police, nor Kat’s husband, want Kat and Beth looking into their affairs. But as they keep digging, the pair of sleuths discover what kind of nightmares reside in their sleepy village....

This book was amazing!

I binged this story start to finish non stop in one day. Yes I live alone and work as a graphic designer so was sat at my computer listening to this and while making tea. Actually tell a lie, I did stop for 20 mins to take a phone call. The story was very refreshing and pretty brutal in a non brutal way... I loved the setup the characters are wonderful the Kat and Mouse names are a nice touch. I really enjoyed this book it was a cozy mystery but felt a bit more mature if that makes any sense? Anita Waller is my new favourite author I will be purchasing the rest of this series. Claire Storey, great name, is wonderful as the narrator I had a lot of fun with this and can't wait to hear the rest of the books.

Fantastic story and narrator

This is book one in the Kat and Mouse series and it's a fantastic opening book.

The story takes place in the peaceful village of Eyam, though that peace is short lived when Kat, a parish deacon, finds Beth (Mouse) in an alleyway after being shot by a taxi driver. Kat looks after Beth and whilst staying with Kat someone sets fire to Beth's home in an attempt to kill her. Along with Beth's nan, Doris, the three ladies set out to find out who is wanting Beth dead and why.

As a fan of audiobooks this is one of the best I have listened to. The narrator has an excellent tone and keeps the listener engaged throughout. I look forward to listening to book 2 in this series.

Different to her other books

Not the same as her other books.....this book has the feel of Murder Mystery Club type novels and is quite tame. A different format, it was ok but I didn't enjoy it so much 🙄
