About this listen

It's 1934. When Miss Pongleton is found murdered on the stairs of Belsize Park station, her fellow boarders in the Frampton Hotel are not overwhelmed with grief at the death of a tiresome old woman. But they all have their theories about the identity of the murderer and help to unravel the mystery of who killed the wealthy 'Pongle'. Several of her fellow residents - even Tuppy the terrier - have parts to play in the events that lead to a dramatic arrest.

This classic mystery novel is set in and around the Northern Line of the London Underground. It is now republished for the first time since the 1930s.

Throughly enjoyable

An entertaining puzzle and interesting slice of life of the era. From ‘Chelsea’ artists to the long and short term residents of a boarding house.
Narration is fine with the characters clearly distinguishable.

Poor

Disappointingly laboured. Very obvious who did the murder. Not even a good depiction of London at the time. There are many better Golden Age detective books that are no yet on audio.

UTTERLY BORING BUT WELL READ

A very tortuous long drawn-out mystery, the mystery is how it ever got published. It was however read by a very good reader otherwise I should have ditched it after the first chapter. Boring, long-drawn out, entirely predictable. Sorry to spoil it for anyone but the hero isn't the villain! Had it not been for the wonderful reader I should have ditched it after the first (of many) chapters!
