Summary
A mansion, a title, and marriage to a wealthy Lord, Lady Eveline Cartwright has it all. Unfortunately, it's not enough to prevent her from being bludgeoned to death one night in the study of Merisham Lodge, the family's country estate in Derbyshire. Suspicion quickly falls on her ne'er-do-well son, Peter, but not everyone in the household is convinced of his guilt. Head kitchen maid Joan Hart and lady's maid Verity Hunter know that when it comes to a crime, all is not always as it seems. With suspicions and motives thick on the ground, Joan and Verity must use all the wit and courage they possess to expose a deadly murderer who will stop at nothing to achieve their aim...

Wrong setting?
Narrator does not do accents well. Family and staff all speak with same accent. Characterisation and behaviour of staff not convincing - staff referring to members of family by their first names, and feeling resentful at not being appreciated, entitled. Female lead more suited to a more modern setting.

Don't waste your time.
The mystery itself is passable, solid 2 stars, but the author seems to have forgotten the story is supposed to take place in 1930. The main character's thinking, opinions and language are too obviously of our own time, and the whole book feels too contemporary and modern. I also found the main character unlikeable and annoying - she does nothing but complain about everything all the time. Finally, the narration feels flat and lifeless. "Murder at Merisham Lodge" being a free Audible listen, I did not expect anything exceptional, but I also did not expect anything this badly researched, written and narrated.

5/10
Was read so fast and didn’t sound right when I slowed it down. Mostly in a monotone with not many breaths.
Would have been a much better listen with a different narrater as couldn’t settle into it like I usually do.

The speed of Narration but not in a good way
The narrator really needs to learn to slow down her speech. It is fine if there is an urgency, but she was going full pelt from the start. It detracted from the story and made it far less enjoyable.

Fantastic
I have heard another audiobook with a very similar plot to this one, but this book is better! It’s very well-written with enjoyable characters, and an exciting story. The narration is excellent too. I will definitely be watching for more books by this author.
