Summary

Canon Daniel Clement has suffered a secret humiliation and to recover takes respite at the monastery where he was a novice. But the monastery doesn't allow the break he needs, for tensions are building there too. There is a death at the monastery, and Daniel thinks it might be murder.

Meanwhile back at Champton, Daniel is the subject of village gossip, his mother Audrey is up to something again, there's trouble at the dress shop, trouble up at the big house, and the puppies are running riot.

As dark secrets unfold, can Daniel solve the mystery at the monastery without the help of Detective Seargeant Neil Vanloo?

A change of scene

Set in a different place and with many emotions and reflections stirred up this marks another superb Canon Clement mystery.

This is the first of the series that has compelled me to Google ecclesiastical practices too - fascinating!

Another gripping tale

The wonderful writing is enhanced by the author’s reading. A powerful combination that can’t be put down. Looking forward to the next book

loved Rev. Cole's voice as narrator

Disliked the use of the F word in such a book, it jarred against the background of religion and the gentility of a bye gone era.

otherwise, a very good read, which I would recommend to others.

Another corker

Loved the previous book so I snapped up this one. Fantastic characters, great story with a unique liturgical element. Read beautifully by the author who manages to separate the characters voices seamlessly. The central relationships are brilliantly observed and touching, and the dialogue of the protagonist’s mother is hilarious and so so clever. I’m guessing she’s based on the author’s own late mother who had a sharp, acerbic wit. This is a great book. Cannot wait for the next one.

In my view, definitely the best so far!

This is captivating, the murder is almost incidental to the lives of the other characters in this story. The details of genius.

As ever Richard Coles reads well.

The balance this time was overstretched by monastic life. We are in a window on life gleaned from time spent with the exceptional time that Richard Coles had with the Spencer family’s parish from his autobiography. At times seemingly stretched out with descriptive monotony that was a wearing rhetoric. So as a reader this novel lacked the vibrancy and pace that his first novel had in buckets.

Not as good as the others

I was disappointed with this one. Bit too emotional and too personal. Interesting references to the monastery but a bit tiresome.

Wasn’t as enamoured as previous books

Bit different from the previous two books but lots of information that I just ignored. I know it’s setting the scene but wasn’t as flowing as the previous two books.

Don’t take that I didn’t enjoy it but I’m looking forward to the next books.

Easy listen. Easy storyline. Well read

Really enjoyed this further instalment. Great for my commutes. An easy listen. Having a church background I enjoy the church aspect of the story. The performance was great - really well read. Captivating. Easy storyline but keeps you interested and listening.
