Summary

As friends, the boisterous and brash American Beryl couldn't be less alike than the prim and proper British Edwina. But as sleuths in an England recovering from the Great War, they're the perfect match.

The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

For over three decades, Edwina Davenport has lived comfortably in Walmsley Parva, but the post-World War I bust has left her in dire financial straits and forced her to advertise for a lodger. When her long-lost school chum Beryl arrives on her doorstep - actually crashes into it in her red motorcar - Edwina welcomes her old friend as her new roommate.

But her idyllic hometown has a hidden sinister side, and when the two friends are drawn in, they decide to set up shop as private inquiry agents, helping Edwina to make ends meet and satisfying Beryl's thirst for adventure. Now this odd couple will need to put their heads together to catch a killer - before this sleepy English village becomes their final resting place.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this. An old fashioned, well written, beautifully read story. Gentle and kind. Will look for book 2

Brilliant narration And a great story. Loved every minute. Keeps you guessing until the very end. Although there were clever clues along the way.

Excellent English village murder mystery

Plots and intrigue, all mixed up with 1920’s values and standards make for an entertaining listen. Brilliantly performed to put the cherry on the top.

Pride and Prejudice in the 20th century

A bit long winded but did need to build up the characters. It's twists and doubts made this a mystery not easily disseminated which is great for allover of mystery novels.

A quick listen

Not a bad story. As like the other reviews, the narration and editing were disappointing, and affected the enjoyment of the book. A good few twists and turns and a surprising outcome.

Enjoyable

I will definitely look out for more from this author and this narrator. Really felt like a golden age of detection novel.

Awful narration

I don’t usually criticise narrators but this story was told so badly that I had to stop listening. There were pauses in all the wrong places, whether this was because she had come to the end of the line or was just taking a breath I don’t know but it completely ruined the flow of the story. The voices too were awful - the women drawled and the men all sounded like sleazy perverts. I would rather just have a story read in a normal voice than have to listen to unconvincing characters. In the end I was just hearing the pauses and the voices and had to stop listening. Probably a good story but I’ll never know now.

A lovey cozy murder mystery

A lovely cozy murder mystery based in a rural country village. Narrated in a sympathetic way.
