Summary

Miss Katherine Danvers has always been a wallflower. But now with her family on the brink of financial ruin, she finds herself a desperate wallflower. To save her family, she'll do anything. Luckily, she has the perfect plan....

She'll impress the ton by simply announcing she is engaged to the reclusive and mysterious Duke of Thornton, Alexander Masters, and secure strong matches for her sisters. No one has heard from the duke in years. Surely he'll never find out before her sisters' weddings and she can go back to her own quiet life.

Soon, though, everything is out of control. At first, it's just a few new ball gowns on the duke's accounts. Then it's interviews with reporters eager for gossip. Before she knows it, Katherine has transformed herself into Kitty Danvers, charming and clever belle of the ton - with everyone eager to meet her thankfully absent fiance.

But when the enigmatic Alexander Masters suddenly arrives in the city, dashing and oh so angry, he demands retribution. Except not in the way Katherine expected....

Contains mature themes.

Great story…but

It was a really thoughtful story with excellent characters. The narrator was TERRIBLE and I almost quit the book several times. Pronunciation is bad; the uptick at the end of each sentence unnecessary - almost ruined the book!

Such a lovely story

A re telling of A beauty and the beast and charmingly re written .
I so loved the duke and kitty,s tale it was so beautiful and endearing.I was slightly put off by the narration as A became R in all the wrong places there is no R in back and many more ….but the story is so lovely I managed to ignore it .Loved the sweetness of kitty , the romance and the passion just so good , so overall I enjoyed it .

Love the story, hate the narrator

It’s all in the title. I really enjoyed the characters and story but Christ of the narrator is infuriating in her pronunciation of certain words. While I listened to it all I think I would have enjoyed the book more with a different narrator. A couple of examples of the infuriating pronunciation: act is pronounced like oct and back is pronounced more like the composer Bach. Not sure if it’s in an attempt of sounding posh but it doesn’t work

Nice story, narrator can't speak English

Like this story which is beauty and the beast meets Jane eyre (fire scarred beast saved by the love of beauty). Stacy Reid writes well and characterisation is usually sure footed. As an English person I have to say the narration drove me nuts. The vowel a is pronounced ah throughout. Thus, perhaps becomes perhahps, Katherine Kahtherine, etc. The worst offender was back (pronounced bahck throughout). Given that bahck can be understood as bark this led to some quite funny lines. The preponderance of the a vowel in english meant I couldn't escape ah-dom. Ruined an otherwise enjoyable tale. We really don't speak like this, not even in the world of Oxford English and received pronunciation. I'm going to stick to the book and leave ah-dom for the birds 😂

Beautiful story

As always, such a beautiful story by Stacy Reid. Loved every second of it.
Couldn't wait to get back to it whenever I had to stop. Haven't listened to such a lovely story for a while now.
Pity about the narrator though.
She could be good if only she would pronounce most words with an A in them, properly. I wish she would read the reviews and listen to herself and understand what we mean.
E.G.
Black. - Blarck
Accident. - Uxcident.
Back. - bark.
Actually. - Uctually.
It's quite distracting and annoying listening to her. But apart from that, I think she could be a very good narrator. There are worse narrators than Mary Sarah that I've listened to. A couple that i couldn't bear to finish and returned them. But she's not so bad if she would only pronounce some words correctly. In fact I will be continuing the series as I absolutely love Stacy Reid's stories. Can't wait for the TV show to come out, as long as they keep to the story line.

A lovely story reined

If you can manage to plow through the dreadful narration you'll find a lovely romance.

I could sort 9f handle the breathiness but not saying simple words properly us just unforgettable.

Mary Sarah would repeated say barck (back), larp (lap) and others the same.

I will never but a another book narrated by her.

Thanks you Stacy for a beautiful story.

Rubbish narrator

I enjoy Stacy Reid’s stories but please please never use this narrator again. She appears to add R’s to words without any ie back becomes barck WHY. If you cannot pronounce the English language correctly then do not narrate books. I persevered but the enjoyment of the story was lost for me.

Acceptable romance ruined by narration

indeed struggled to finish...no matter how much I would like to invest in the charecters the narrator just ruined it ... made me focus on her intonations and breathlessness. why does she have to read each chapter heading as such..."chapter telweveeeeee"...pardon but the story was distracted by the narrator unfortunately

AWFUL NARRATION test of endurance

Because someone can mean does not mean that they should, diabolical!
It it actually sounds like artificial intelligence robot voice, overly breathy and little intonation in keeping with the sentence. Dialogue between characters was abysmal, played around with the speed to make sure I could get the best out of it but didn get past the first chapter. I'm sure I have listened to this narrator before without it being so bad. (edit - I have and that's the only book out of the hundreds I have that I have had a refund on! Had!)
need a refund.
I couldn't rate the story as couldn't endure the narrator that far, however the author should have some say over its performance if this is how she perceived it I cannot think I would be a ble to endure other books.
