Story
Throughout history people have sought to cope with a life that is often stressful and hard. We have actually known for some time that developing compassion for oneself and others can help us face up to and win through the hardship and find a sense of inner peace. However in modern societies we rarely focus on this key process that underpins successful coping and happiness and can be quick to dismiss the impact of modern living on our minds and well-being. Instead we concentrate on 'doing, achieving' and having'.

'Two souls in his breast'
- By Rachel Redford on 06-06-16
Summary
A shocking, heart-rending and blisteringly funny account of what it's like to live with mental illness, by a powerful new comic voice.
When Michelle Thomas suffered her first major depressive episode six years ago, she read and watched and listened to everything about mental health she could get her hands on in an effort to fix herself. God, it was tedious. And, quite frankly, depressing.
Which is the last thing she needed.
What she did need was a therapist who would listen and offer a wellness strategy catered to her specific needs. What she got was advice to watch a few YouTube videos and a cheerful reminder that 'it could be worse'.
An honest, hilarious and heart-rending account of living with mental illness, My Sh*t Therapist will help you navigate the world, care for your mind and get through sh*t diagnoses, jobs, medications, boyfriends, habits, homes and therapists.
You'll find no scented candles or matcha tea 'cures' for mental illness here. Instead, learn how a modern woman and her friends and followers navigate life with their brilliant but unpredictably sh*t brains.
Having a crappy mental health day? I've got you.
Want to chat antidepressants and breakdowns?
Pull up a pew and let's get into it.

Flipping Incredible
This was my first audible book, and a flipping incredible one at that! I’m trying to understand my depression and this is exactly what I needed! I’m completing my final unit at uni on my mental health journey and this is exactly what I needed. Michelle, you’re a life saver and I can’t thank you enough for this heart warming, funny and utterly relatable book! I’ve even bought the hardback copy as it’s so amazing I don’t want to put it down! I’ll keep re-reading this over and over again!
If you struggle with your mental health, have questions about it, or just want an amazingly personal and beautifully read book, this is it!!!

Interesting & honest, but not what I was after.
Some of the words in this are very relatable -- thankfully I have found a path that involves mindfulness, and I now work on not keeping that part of my narrative activated.
Firstly, I have a bit of an issue with the lens through which she views the world. For example, her ideas about gender, including the use of the term 'genderqueer' are quite unscientific and political, and potentially do a disservice to people who are intersexed or those who suffer real and diagnosed gender dysphoria. She also sometimes speaks about women's issues in a way that paints women as unique victims -- it's a disempowering narrative that undermines the experience of men when they have to deal with very similar issues.
I won't let that get in the way of the message, however, as I've certainly had my own share of problems over the years and she's just filtering through her own perspective.
Overall it's a good listen, but I'm currently more than halfway through and noting this is more autobiographical than it is practical -- it's not useless either, just not quite what I was hoping for.
So, a couple of hours to go and I'm not sure if I will finish this book or not; it doesn't seem to provide any solutions to the real issues of mental health, just personal reflections and a catalogue of difficult problems -- but it does keep the debate going and it does offer hope in the form of identification for people who may be dealing with their issues in isolation.
I hope it gets read or listened to by people with the power to change things as her reflections on the UK's God awful system are absolutely 100% accurate.
Oh, and finally she has a nice voice and seems like a decent person -- so if you (Michelle, the author) ever reads this, then I wish you well on your journey as my mixed review has no reflection on you as a human being - and yes, that guy was certainly an arse for saying those things to you.
This may not resonate with everyone here, but I found my own peace within a spiritual solution -- if you are struggling then these are what helped me at different times), that's not a judgment or advice, it's your journey and I'm just sharing what helped me along my own, even though some of them don't resonate now.
David R. Hawkins - Letting Go
Louise Hay - you can heal your life
Don Miguel Ruiz - The Four Agreements
Eckhart Tolle - The Power of Now
Abraham Hicks - Ask and it is given (book version is better than audio)
Gabrielle Bernstein - The Universe Has Your Back.
Not that any of the above should be considered a definitive reading list for the eternally miserable -- some of the titles may be a bit too 'cosmic' for you -- but if you want upliftment and a new perspective then it's my opinion these titles may provide some comfort.
I wish all of you the very best.

Like sinking into a warm bubbly bath. Michelle “gets it”!!!
I downloaded this audiobook whilst navigating through a rough patch of poor mental health. Michelle manages to articulate the messy, nonsensical pig sty that is is depression. Beautifully narrated by the author, it’s also peppered with stories from other “1 in 4’s”... It’s made me laugh, given me goosebumps and helped me feel less alone.

Not what I thought it would be
Got this on the daily deal but was just average really. Thought I might return it as it just wasn’t for me but stuck with it as I work with young people who experience ill mental health and I was hoping this would give some insight - but it didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. Wish I could’ve sent it on to someone else who might appreciate it rather than suck up the small cost I paid or return for a refund and wish there was another option offered via audible.
I found there was unnecessary swearing for me personally and just wasn’t what I was expecting despite reading the varied reviews but that’s personal choice. I didn’t request a refund because I only paid a small price and felt bad that the author wouldn’t get their cut but did feel this would’ve been better suited to a free pod cast than a “book”

Soothing
I listened to this on audible and I'd really recommend it if you enjoy audio books. Listening to Michelle's words feels like talking to an old friend, and her lilting welsh accent is very soothing.
She helped me to feel less alone in my own struggles with mental health but it wasn't heavy. It was light, and comforting. I think we all struggle with mental health at some point and this helps give us a little insight into what others may experience, and in my experience helped it all feel a bit less daunting.

not really funny and playing the victim game
initially intruiging idea, followed by a basic victim narrative, im sure there could be a deeper discussion instead of all these superficial anecdotes
