Summary

'Mental illness has led to some of the worst times of my life...but it has also led to some of the most brilliant. Bad things happen, but good things can come from them. And strange as it might sound, my mental health has been vastly improved by being mentally ill.'

From depression and anxiety to personality disorders, one in four of us experience mental health issues every year and, in these strange and unsettling times, more of us than ever are struggling to cope. In No Such Thing as Normal, Bryony offers sensible, practical advice, covering subjects such as sleep, addiction, worry, medication, self-image, boundary setting, therapy, learned behaviour, mindfulness and, of course - as the founder of Mental Health Mates - the power of walking and talking. She also strives to equip those in need of help with tools and information to get the best out of a poorly funded system that can be both frightening and overwhelming.

The result is a lively, honest and direct guide to mental health that cuts through the Instagram-wellness bubble to talk about how each of us can feel stronger, better and just a little bit less alone.

A MUST READ for those of us whose lives are affected by Mental ill health

I have read and listened to SOOO MANY books about mental health and self improvement over the last couple of years that I’m sure i could open a small library 😆, however, this one is the best by far, in my humble opinion. I have been living with mental ill health since i was a child (i’ll be 50 this year) and the brutally honest, no nonsense, yet compassionate way the author approaches the subject has resonated like nothing has managed to before.
This is a bang up to date book packed with easy to digest information and really helpful and realistic practical tips to help you create a strategy for improving your mental health and well-being.
I loved it, will listen to it again and again and will recommend it to others - actually, i already have!
Well worth your credit and if you’ve none left, buy it. It’ll be money very well spent xx

Best Best Best book!!!

This book helped me an unbelievable amount as I come to terms with another depression dip. Bryony is so fantastic to listen to and everything whirling round in my head has been so incredibly articulated and makes me feel less alone. If you suffer from mental health or even if you don't, it's such a great, comforting, truthful, Insightful book and I'd recommend it to everyone!

Good points to remember,

Lots of unnecessary stuff about the funding and inadequate nature of mental health services in the NHS, awe got it that they are under funded the first time no need to repeat.

Great practical guide to mental wellness

I loved this short, practical guide to mental wellness, including a chapter on lockdown that chimed deeply with me. I've listened to almost all of Bryony Gordon's books and have enjoyed following her mental health journey - a joy to listen to even when she is talking about the most difficult topics.

Whether you are just feeling frequently worried and anxious or have a serious mental health challenge, I think there will be something in this book for you. Trigger warning (obviously) for mental health issues, particularly depression and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Stressful!

The talking was way too fast and stressful for a book trying to calm people down. Even when slowed right down, on Audible. Probably a great book but I couldn't cope with the speed..

I needed this!

I really enjoyed this, I have listened to most of Bryony’s books and this book has been really helpful. If you feel like the past year has thrown your mental health off it’s usual course or taken you back a few (thousand) steps on your recovery, then I think you’ll find Bryony’s words and her reflections very useful.

A wonderful read!

I’ve loved Bryony’s work for a long time, and this book was even more personal for me as I’ve recently discovered I have OCD.

A mix of personal experience and great advice makes for a great book. I listened along whilst reading and loved every part! 🙂
