About this listen

They killed his sister. Now he'll kill them all.

Michael Bale is an elite close protection officer. That's why the Met police has given him the toughest job of all: guarding the Minister of Defence at a moment when Chinese-British relations have hit a deadly boiling point. And when Michael's life isn't on the line for his work, he's taking his chances waging war on a powerful London gang family. Their dealer supplied a lethal ecstasy pill to his sister, and Michael is determined to take them down, one at a time. But will he get away with it - or will his colleagues in the force realise that the man on an underworld killing spree is one of their own?

Critic reviews

"Mickey Bale is a Jack Reacher for a harder, faster, more-assured millennium. Nemesis is the kind of book for which the word 'compelling' was coined." (Manda Scott)

Not the Anthony’s riches norm

Having listened to all of Anthony Riches previous books based in Roman times to just to the present in this one I didn’t know what to expect would jumping to a modern setting let the listeners down. The simple answer to that is No this was a great listen and I would recommend it to anyone who particularly if you like Chris Ryan and Andy mcnab books.

Refreshingly different and enjoyable action

I listen to a lot of audiobooks and have several in the "He was ex-SAS/Navy SEAL/Spook/Agent/Special forces/lone wolf blah blah" action style. And yes, we all like a bit of escapism etc but I often find the 'hero' is basically an unhinged psychopath that we only forgive and accept because of his (yawn) tragic back story. Now, I understand it is these things that make the story in some sense but I can all get a little formulaic, dare I say tedious. Especially when the author has clearly no experience of an actual fight or unarmed combat, let alone fired a gun and yet insists on over cooking the goose with long highly detailed (and unrealistic) fight scenes. I'm glad to say Anthony has taken a more thoughtful approach and stuck with a narrative and believable characters rather than all action and invincible but flawed psycho protagonists.

I found the story worked and didn't fluff around, and even managed a few setups where it didn't quite go where I thought it would. On the whole it was a refreshing 'page' turner and I couldn't wait to get into the next chapter. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

The only negative for me was the narrator. That (to be fair) is perhaps more me but I found the 'geyser' wide-boy 'East Londin' style distracting at first. However, I got used to it and I guess it was in context... And it wasn't as bad as some of the Americanised books with squeaky 'female' voices.

If you're into Andy McNab and similar you'll enjoy it. And if you've not read anything in this genre before it's a good benchmark of where these books should be...

Riches excels in another genre

It goes to show great writing can effortlessly engage the reader in an authoritative high pace modern thriller. Riches’s Roman epics are up there with the best. Nemesis is also up there with the best in contemporary writing. Richard Fox narrates well and does a great job nailing a variety of London accents.

Consistently great books

Superb. Consistent quality from the author. From Romans to modern day it doesn’t matter. Each subject captured wonderfully. Action and depth.
