Summary

Some lies will never stay hidden.

When the body of a teenage boy is found in the River Witham, it falls to DI Freya Bloom and her team to raise the truth from the depths.

The boy, nicknamed Simple Simon, was a troubled soul. But when Bloom digs deeper into Simon’s life, she discovers that not only was he the victim of a viscous cyber bullying attack, but also suffered sexual abuse. Was his death a shocking teenage suicide, or does somebody have a terrible secret to hide?

With four potential suspects in the firing line, and guilt in every one of their eyes, Bloom must make some difficult choices. But as the investigation progresses, one thing becomes abundantly clear—Simple Simon wasn’t as simple as everybody thought. In fact, he was smarter than them all.

Never to Return is the chilling sixth book in the brand-new British crime series from USA Today best-selling author Jack Cartwright. Perfect for fans of JD Kirk, JM Dalgliesh, Rachel McClean, and Ann Cleeves.

Another great one

Great series. Love the characters, the plot, the narration. I’m going to be very sad when I get to the end of the series! Keep writing Mr Cartwright!

Good story with an inaccuracy or two…

Another good tale based right in my back yard in Lincolnshire. As usual, not an obvious ending so hard to guess the perp. Good narration with easy-to-recognise characterisations and accents.

The only minor irritation for me (and, yes I’m a pedantic body) is that it takes a lot longer to cruise from place to place on the river than the author has researched - I used to live on a boat on that river, so it glared at me. It takes just over 6 hours to cruise from Brayford Pool to Tattershall on a good day, not the much shorter time detailed in the book. The other cruising times are way out too, but okay.
Still a good, listenable story. On to the next one in the series…

The humour is getting better and better ,love them

The books just seems to be getting better and better, with each book I have read or listened to in this case. The narrator really does add interest in the story with his narration, particularly with the Guillispe character's Glaswegian accent. The humour is getting more delicious as I have gone through each book by this very interesting author. I just can't wait to start the next book, so very good, love the characters. I will not be giving the plot away, that's for other readers to discover😉

Another excellent story

I love the fact that Jack Cartwright doesn’t skimp on length of book (Audible listen). He gives his readers a great story for their money. I am so pleased I can go straight to 7 as I came across series late. Oh and great Narrator too.

The retort “eh?” Did my head in

What was afresh book was ruined by the number of characters that replied with the response “eh?” Found myself shouting at the phone very irritating and just not necessary!

bullying theme

Sadly I am halfway through this story and as an irony the theme of bullying is reiterated through the bullying behaviour of the detectives to DC Cruz.
Yet this is seemingly acceptable which if today this would be unacceptable in today's world.
Control of the antics of her crew should fall on Freya Bloom but she seems to be diverted from her sexual fantasies of her DS.
It seems unprofessional. There is banter and 'craic' however I feel it goes too far.
