About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Niccolo Rising by Dorothy Dunnett, read by John Banks.

The time is the 15th century, when intrepid merchants became the new knighthood of Europe. Among them, none is bolder or more cunning than Nicholas vander Poele of Bruges, the good-natured dyers apprentice who schemes and swashbucukes his way to the helm of a merchantile empire. NICCOLO RISING, Book One of the series, finds us in Bruges, 1460. Street smart, brilliant at figures, adept at the subtleties of diplomacy and the well-timed untruth, Dunnett's hero rises from wastrel to prodigy in a breathless adventure that wins him the love of the strongest woman in Bruges and the hatred of two powerful enemies. NICCOLO RISING combines history, adventure and high romance in the tradition stretching from Alexandre Dumas to Mary Renault.

Excellent

Having listened to The Lymond Chronicles (6 books ) by Dorothy Dunnett ( which are excellent) I thought I would give this series a try. I am not disappointed. This series precedes the Lymond Chronicles, although it was written after them. As before, Dorothy Dunnett weaves a fully loaded story with twists and turns most certainly not expected.
I shall continue with the whole series ( 8 books) as I am totally hooked.

John Banks is superb as the narrator. One of the best.

Great… just great!

Loved it all. I’ve read this book at least 4 times over the years and to now be able to sit and listen to it is luxury. This now needs to be made into a film with Sam Heughan as Niccolo and I will die happy.

Enough for now thanks

Not unenjoyable but somehow this tale of rags to riches rise just didn’t grab me enough to want to read the others on the series. I wasn’t grabbed by the reason given for a series of unexplained deaths. I’m really not sure why!

The very best historical fiction

Dorothy Dunnett is the doyen of superb historical fiction. Her characters are fascinating, leaping fully formed from the page. Her research is immaculate, and she teases with it rather than force feeds. I first read this when it was published and loved it then. Revisiting I was a little worried it would be dated, or not live up to the memory of 30 odd years ago. Instead this listening far surpassed my original memory. Better than Mantel, she takes the reader gently by the hand and leads them off to a past, so real, so beautifully described, it steals away reason and breath.

Brilliant

I have enjoyed listening to many books on Audible however Niccolo Rising has been absolutely brilliant. The history, adventure, intrigue, romance, exotic locations and much more to come in the series. Next book already in my library! Excellent Dorothy Dunnett and narrator too.
