Summary

As a young child, Herman Lehmann was captured by a band of plundering Apache Indians and remained with them for nine years. This is his dramatic and unique story.

His memoir, fast-paced and compelling, tells of his arduous initial years with the Apache as he underwent a sometimes torturous initiation into Indian life. Peppered with various escape attempts, Lehmann's recollections are fresh and exciting in spite of the years past.

Lehmann provides us with a fascinating look at Apache, and later, Comanche culture. He tells of their rituals and medicinal practices and gives an insight into Native American manufacture of arrowheads, saddles, and shields.

After a few years, Lehmann became completely integrated into the warrior life, joining in on raids throughout the Southwest and Mexico. Nine Years Among the Indians tells of violent clashes with white rangers and other Native American tribes, scalpings, and the violence of life in 19th-century Western America.

Fascinating

I highly recommend this audiobook. It is the most incredible true story of a boy taken by an Apache tribe and later his life with Comanche Indians. I think it’s somewhat easy to idealise how the Indians lived and this story does no such thing….it tells it how it was, the cruelty, gore, violence of the Apache especially but also of the difference between them and the Comanche. It’s a way of life gone forever and this account of it is fascinating. The cruelty of both the Indians and the white man at these times is terrible and it really does show the bravery (or foolishness!) of those early settlers heading out to begin their new lives in ‘Injun territory’ I didn’t know that so many children were taken and raised (or killed) during those wars and the fortitude shown by Hermann is amazing for a young boy. I wish it were longer. Excellent book.

Of its time

A book of its time. Written in the 1920s it is a remarkable life, but with little insight. One adventure rolls into another, often dramatic, sometime macabre. This reader wanted to know more about why Herman so readily adopted the ways of the tribe who kidnapped him.

Interesting Part of History.

An enjoyable listen of a true story that captivates your imagination from another time. The descriptions of violent battles, a battle of survival. & The orator takes you back in time to an important time in American history & you almost feel part of it all.

Good read.

A savage tale and if it is an historically true account, quite horrific in parts but an interesting book . Not for the weak hearted.

Be prepared for some gruesome details how Indians live , day to day. Before they became civilised.

Fascinating!

I loved this story, despite descriptions of violent acts and battles being quite graphic at times it gives a unique insight into an important period of American history.

What a piece of history 😀

Amazing, poignant and very informative. If you read Karl May as a youngster, or enjoyed westerns, this factual account will set you straight in a few things. Not to be missed 🎈

I listened in Awe...

Very interesting. I have never been educated about American ways of life as I live in the UK. I have a rapidly growing need to learn about all aspects of Native American Indian culture as far back as possible. I have read/ listened to many stories made from findings of this way of life but real life happenings are even more inspiring... I thank you..
