London, 1942.

Despite the raging war, spirited 18-year-old Nellie Morris lives a quiet life in the tight-knit East End community of Bethnal Green. Her family and friends all tease that she will marry air raid warden Billy, the boy next door who’s always been sweet on her.

The arrival of Ray, a handsome American airman stationed nearby, causes Nellie to question everything she thought she knew about her future.

Nellie’s new-found happiness is short-lived when a tragic accident occurs during an air raid. Even the closest family can’t escape the devastation of war, and as the secrets and truth about that fateful night become clear, they threaten to tear Nellie – and those dearest to her – apart.

’There is no healing without remembering, and there is no remembering without stories. So thank goodness Brown’s Nanny Ruth, who was a survivor of the crush, told her granddaughter what she remembered…You might open Nineteen Steps for the celebrity name, but stick with it for the history of an under-recognized event of World War II.’ New York Times

Bethnal Green is a very special place

Very good story and brought back so many memories as I walked those streets hundreds of times and can picture every one. The accents were a bit off putting but still enjoyed the story but was very predictable .

Can imagine it being picked up for a TV film maybe?

Good story, but very predictable

This is a very well written novel, the story is very gripping and easy to imagine happening. I did find that every event that happened was extremely predictable. A good book nevertheless.

perfect choice

I really enjoyed this book. I was invested from the start. I must admit I am a suckered for a wartime romance but the story was much more than this. It tells the story or a real life tragedy with great heartache.
The narration was fine, some pronunciation could be annoying but definitely did not put me off.

Spectacular

What an amazing rollercoaster of a story! I felt every emotion! I doubt I would have enjoyed it as much as I did if I had tried to read the physical copy

A Leap of Faith, Perhaps

A great book to listen to. Great mix of fact and fiction. The romance was beautifully penned. The story made me think of the film "Yanks". The narration was a bit difficult to follow. Not sure which of the women was speaking. Will read the book for myself. Hope Millie writes more.

Absolutely astounding tale, could NOT stop listening!!

This isn't my usual type of read, but as I do dabble in family history/DNA investigation, I thought I'd give it a go. Such an engaging story! & such an awful incident, which is written so well I felt as if I lived it... I confess, I cried thru most of it!! Finished this audio book in 2 days. Cannot recommend it enough👌
