Summary

The first book in a brand new World War II saga series. Perfect for fans of Ellie Dean and Annie Groves.

Dover, 1939.

At the heart of Dover's Market Square lies the Castle's Café. A bustling, homely place run by the formidable Nellie Castle and her six children.

Since the scandalous birth of her beloved son 10 years before, Marianne, Nellie's eldest daughter, has preferred to stay in the kitchen, hidden away from the scrutiny of the town gossips. Overcome with shame, Marianne has never revealed the name of Donny's father - not even to her own mother.

But with World War II just around the corner, Marianne's past catches up with her. And suddenly the lives of the Castle family become a lot more complicated.

Will the secrets from her past destroy their future?

Engaging story, insightful descriptions.

Far from my typical genre but a girl cannot survive on a diet of sociopaths alone.
Surprisingly enjoyable, captivating story with some interesting characters.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I like a “bedtime listen” and this fitted the bill. I felt that the narrator was a perfect choice and the story was sweet and, at some points exciting. I often had a listen before I got up too as I was keen to know what happened next!

An easy listen with good local history

The story was good, more so in the second half as the characters take time to get to know. Now I have, I will be listening to others in the series.

Not living during the war this book was so enjoyable. I could feel the anxiety that people who lived around the coast must of felt.

An insight into living in Dover during WWII

To be honest, if I hadn't found out that the author had attended the same school as me, I might have just scrolled by but having spent 5 years at school in Dover without ever having given the second world war any consideration , I was intrigued and definitely not disappointed. Lively characters and narrative reel you in quite fast and keep you hooked. Thankfully with audible you can listen whilst cooking, cleaning and driving ;-)
