About this listen

Born in a prison and removed from his drug-dependent mother, rejection is all that 7-year-old Alex knows.

When Cathy is asked to foster little Alex, aged 7, her immediate reaction is: Why can’t he stay with his present carers for the last month? He’s already had many moves since coming into care as a toddler and he’ll only be with her a short while before he goes to live with his permanent adoptive family. But the present carers are expecting a baby and the foster mother isn’t coping, so Alex goes to live with Cathy.

He settles easily and is very much looking forward to having a forever family of his own. The introductions and move to his adoptive family go well. But Alex is only with them for a week when problems begin. What happens next is both shocking and upsetting, and calls into question the whole adoption process.

Great listen

I listen to audible as I’m going on school runs or shopping or cooking tea for my family .In 2019 my 4 children were taken into care as me and my partner were at that time class a drug users and had been for 15 years, reading these books gives me the reassurance that my kids are happy and safe x We have been clean from drugs now since 2020 and have a new daughter who lives with us , We see our other children regularly and my oldest is coming home soon x

Just amazing

Yet again another amazing book by Cathy glass, she has an amazing ability to make you feel every book, regardless of if you read it of it being read to you, but either way it's definitely worth it.

Incredible insight into all aspects

This is the one and only book (on this subject, ie the fostering stories) that has me crying - real tears. I kept imagining my son at Alex’s age - and I felt every emotion. The impact of rejection …. the fear he absolutely felt, self-incrimination, belief that he was to blame for his unfortunate life and his therefore deep unhappiness, which he did his best to vocalise, and when later he didn’t know how to express and in came out in self-sabotage.
I am grateful for the understanding and explanation of what, below the surface, young people in these situations experience and how it sometimes (commonly, unfortunately) plays out.
Cathy is an amazing woman as are the beautiful Welsh couple who have hearts as big as a bucket

Another beautiful story

Made me so sad as I’m 40 this year and desperate to have children! I can’t even adopt cause you have to have atleast 2 bedrooms but it’s so expensive! Yet you have this family with all the money and space and they send this lovely little boy away

Heartbreaking😭😭😭🤬🥺

Proof of just how deep words can stick

An emotional read that forces you to feel as if you're Alex himself. Caprivating narrative!
