Summary

Dickie Arbiter was spokesman for the queen during the most turbulent period of her reign. On Duty with the Queen is an open and engaging account of his life and his fascinating role in serving this unique family at a time of momentous change.

Dickie gives his personal insights into events that shaped his relationship with the royal family over the years, from joining the queen on a picnic at Balmoral in 1988 to being alongside her at the time of the death of Diana Princess of Wales in 1997.

In this honest and entertaining audiobook, Dickie Arbiter recounts his life's journey from a broadcast journalist to becoming a press spokesman to the royal family and back again to journalism. He discusses the inner workings of everyday life in Buckingham Palace and what it was really like to work under the media spotlight with the most famous family in the world.

Excellent!

A beautifully written account, without any sensational ‘revelations’. It’s always good to hear books read by the author, and this is no exception. I thoroughly recommend it.

Rather Misleading Title

This book was interesting but there was not very much about HM Queen Elizabeth. A better title might have been ‘On duty FOR the Queen’ as most of it was about working for Charles and Diana.

Easy listening

Fantastic biography of Dickie Arbiter read by himself with many stories from his time at working at the palace. But also loved the flit back in time occasionally to his childhood. If I had one negative then that would be that he tended to talk too quickly at times.

Satisfied

A nice listen, nothing overly exciting in the book but still nice to listen to stories about the royals.

Great

I have a lot of respect for Dickie Arbiter I think he did a great job with the book.
I like the book, I've never been that interested in Diana but his experience and thought where great to listen, that and the relationship he saw her have with Charles. It was nice to hear about his interaction with the Queen.
I would have liked a little more on Dickie life but over great

What an extraordinary life this man is had

A fascinating look into the life of a royal press officer, and beyond. throughout the book shows his upmost respect for her Majesty the Queen and her family. He is a real quintessential Gentleman, who has had a fascinating life & there’s so much more to this man than I’d ever imagine.
Written and read perfectly. I would no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone. It gives an insight into the royal family without giving too much away.
