Summary

There are only two things in life that interest Stanley: solving crossword puzzles, and getting his hands on his mother-in-law’s money. For 20 years, the puzzles have been his only pleasure, the money his only dream. It has never occurred to Stanley that his mother-in-law would try to outsmart him and the money would never be his. Until now.

It is only now that Stanley, so clever at misleading double meanings and devious clues, decides to construct a puzzle of his own - and so give death a helping hand.

True Ruth Rendell 🧡

Narration is excellent and the tawdry tale makes you shout out loud. Poor old V. Most enjoyable.

Finally :)

I loved this book. It caught me from the start, and that is a rare thing. It build up nicely, without too many surpices but still catching. The narrator did a very good job, at least for me who is not native to English, and this helped keeping it interesting to listen.

Good storyline, excellent narration.

I throughly enjoyed this story, although a bit meandering at times.

I loved the narration where different characters were given their own dialects and tone.

Gripping

Really enjoyed this, vintage Ruth Rendell. Good narration and very engaging story. Kept me enthralled right to the end.

A cracking story

I quickly became immersed in this story. The main protagonist is vividly drawn and soon sinks further into the depths of depravity. A very unique spin on his obsession with crosswords. A superbly flawed villain, his own words enemy.

Listened in two sessions - beautifully British, wonderful characters, well written and excellently narrated. Great stuff.

The great story teller Ruth Rendell.

I loved the twists and turns. Brilliant book, I loved the strength of the female characters. The late Nicky Henson gave a fantastic performance narrating the many characters to perfection bringing them to life.
