Summary

This case is proving a difficult one for Chief Inspector Wexford. All he has to go on is his own intuitive suspicions. Was he becoming cynical and untrusting or was this one of the most ingenious crimes he had ever tackled?

A Classic Ruth Rendell

Just a great English murder story. Well read by Nigel Anthony with a twist at the end.

keeps up the pace

whilst all RR books are really quite repetitive this manages to keep sight of the plot and move along

My favourite so far of the Wexfords

I've been rattling through these since they came into the included section of the audible membership. As others have said this is not the most complex of plots, but I actually enjoyed that as I could keep up well with all the characters! It was a almosr a one man hunt/obsession to reveal the truth. Plenty of little twists and red herrings. Typical cosy crime rather than a gore fest. Nice narration. I must dig out the TV series one day as it was a bit before my time really.

One of her better books

I am gradually listening to the Wexford series. This one had a good plot although I guessed early on who had been guilty. Another character was introduced at a late stage in the book which shouldn't happen. Some of the behaviour of the characters was unrealistic. This book didn't have as much descriptive waffle as some of Rendell's stories. The voice of the narrator is rather too harsh at times.

Not believable

I found the the story unbelievable 15 months of paying for things out of his own pocket. with no real proof that the person was responsible.
