Summary

Beloved author Victoria Hislop returns to Crete in this long-anticipated sequel to her multi-million-copy number one best seller The Island.

25th August 1957. The island of Spinalonga closes its leper colony. And a moment of violence has devastating consequences.

When time stops dead for Maria Petrakis and her sister, Anna, two families splinter apart and, for the people of Plaka, the closure of Spinalonga is forever coloured with tragedy.

In the aftermath, the question of how to resume life looms large. Stigma and scandal need to be confronted and somehow, for those impacted, a future built from the ruins of the past.

Number one best-selling author Victoria Hislop returns to the world and characters she created in The Island - the award-winning novel that remains one of the biggest selling reading group novels of the century. It is finally time to be reunited with Anna, Maria, Manolis and Andreas in the weeks leading up to the evacuation of the island...and beyond.

A lovely (almost) stand alone sequel to The Island

I did really enjoy this novel. Expanding on what we already knew and adding some different characters was great. Emilia's narration was really good too.

Good follow up

Enjoyed this as a good follow up to The Island. Greek pronunciation not too great though.

Worth listening to

I really enjoyed The Island and this is a nice follow up. It fills in much of the detail following Anna's death. The book was beautifully narrated.

Really Enjoyed this book

Before I listened to this book. I read a lot of poor reviews. However on reading this i found that it cannot be another story of Spinalonga as the Island had closed and a cure for Leprosy found. This continues the story on land. Please note that you have to read The Island first

Least favourite book

I have followed Victoria for years but this book was my least favourite. It lacked depth and detail. Sadly if felt like cashing in on past success.

disappointed

Disappointing follow up to the Island which was so great. Characters were simplistic, more of a journal, no real story.

One August Night

Very disappointing in all categories. No real story and inconsequential dialogue. Performance was very stilted.

The truth will out!

Having read the other books that leads us to this one I was immediately captured by the story line and remained intrigued until the end- very heartwarming as well as a story well told.

Could not put it down ☺️

Overall a good, interesting read. As a Greek speaker, some of the pronunciation of the Greek words made me giggle. The story was left open for a third book... hopefully soon.

One August Night

A gentle story (despite the violence in the story) gently read, perhaps to gently. It felt slow to start and it was only my past experience of reading Victoria Hislop’s work and a love of Crete that made me stick with it. The central characters were a bit two dimensional for me. Either good or bad, the exception being the paternal grandfather. Despite longing for more contrast between the light and dark I still enjoyed the story, though the ending was disappointing, perhaps Sophia’s story is next.
