Summary

From the Queen of Police Procedural Joy Ellis, the #1 bestselling author of the Jackman and Evans series and Guard Her with Your Life, comes a terrifying new Audible Original thriller featuring a brand-new detective, Det. Inspector Kate Carter. Performed by Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter, Mission: Impossible, Captain America).

Det. Inspector Kate Carter and her team are assigned to investigate the murder of man found inside the wreckage of a car. A vintage vinyl record from 1964, found next to the body, soon turns out to be an important clue as a second body is discovered. And meanwhile, Det. Inspector Kate, shrewd and smart, and a happy-go-lucky mum to three children, has something very dark to contend with her in her personal life. Sinister phone calls, creepy notes left on her car, unwanted gifts being left at her doorstep: Kate can no longer deny that she herself is being pursued by an obsessive stalker…

Enjoyable

Really enjoyed this story by Joy Ellis. Well written and plotted. Liked the characters. Held my interest and the twist at the end was a surprise. Narrated well.

entertaining but average

the story was intriguing enough with likeable characters, but I find Ellis' renditions of relationship talk excruciating. It never seems natural. Also dialogue is used for a lot of exposition so you get those statements crammed with facts or questions that nobody would ever say in real life.
Nonetheless, I did listen until the end and the story was satisfying enough. A fair listen to while away a few hours when a really complicated plot might be beyond your tired brain!

It was okay!

Ellis introduces the reader to DI Kate Carter, a multitasking mother who starts to receive anonymous notes and gifts from an admirer. It's not long before Carter and her team realise she has a stalker.
The threats continue as the DI tries to recall who she has upset over the years. Forcing the family to leave their home to keep the children, her husband and herself safe. Meanwhile, her team are called to investigate several suspicious deaths.
As the bodies start mounting up, the pathologist Cold Colin runs post-mortems and soon realises there is a connection, giving the team more questions than answers.

It's a good tale, but it's not captivating. It's the kind of book you can easily catch up on if you miss a few chapters.

Interesting story enough turns to keep me listening to the end

Another good book from joy Ellis but lacking something extra that you get with her detective series. The characters don’t have as much depth so I didn’t care as much whether they made it to the end of the story. I did enjoy it but wouldn’t rush to read another if it did become a series

An easy listen

A very light, easy listen. Lacked much in the way of depth or tension, but passed a few hours. Liked the narration, even though the story itself felt largely bland and predictable.
