Summary

Nigel Farage is arguably one of the most influential British politicians of the 21st century. His campaign to take the UK out of the EU began as a minority and extreme point of view, but in June 2016 it became the official policy of the nation after a divisive referendum. In Michael Crick's brilliant new biography, One Party After Another, we find out how he did it, despite never once managing to get elected to Parliament.

Farage left public school at the age of 16 to go and work in the City, but in the 1990s he was drawn into politics, joining UKIP. Ironically, it was the electoral system for the European Parliament that gave him access to a platform, and he was elected an MEP in 1999. His everyman persona, combined with a natural ability as a maverick and outspoken performer on TV, ensured that he garnered plenty of media attention. His message resonated in ways that rattled the major parties—especially the Conservatives—and suddenly the UK's membership of the EU was up for debate.

Controversy was never far away, with accusations of racism against the party and various scandals. But, having helped secure the referendum, Farage was largely sidelined by the successful official Brexit campaign. When Parliament struggled to find a way to leave, Farage created the Brexit Party to ensure Britain did eventually leave the EU early in 2020. Crick's compelling new study takes the listener into the heart of Farage's story, assessing his methods, uncovering remarkable hidden details and builds to an unmissable portrait of one of the most controversial characters in modern British politics.

Superb!!!

In a time when political narratives are often driven by sensationalism and hyperbole, Crick's biography of Nigel Farage stands as a beacon of integrity. The fairness with which he navigates through Farage's triumphs and controversies is a testament to his commitment to the truth, even when the truth might not be as black and white as some might prefer. This commitment to accuracy is what elevates the biography beyond a mere account of events and transforms it into a critical piece of political literature.

Michael Crick's biography of Nigel Farage is a triumph of biographical craftsmanship. Its unmatched detail, crystalline clarity, and unwavering fairness combine to create a work that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging. Crick's ability to render a multidimensional portrait of Farage without falling into the traps of bias or sensationalism is a testament to his prowess as a biographer. This biography is not just a captivating read; it is a definitive piece of political literature that sets the bar for the genre.

What a tremendous read!"

As expected, Michael Crick has delivered a forensic analysis of Farage and maintained a rivetting attention to detail right until, the closing words. He doesn't pull his punches but neither is this the hatchet job I was worried that it might be.
With a lifelong interest in politics, this is one of the most revealing books I have ever read. And whilst I enjoy following the big political stories Crick's great tome reveals the special characters which inhabit the murky world of politics and reinforced my wish never to get involved in this treacherous trade.
But hat's off to the author for an amazingly well researched and revealing study on this most enigmatic of characters. It's well worth the read.

Wokerati impressed

I am a paid up member of the Guardian reading, Tofu eating, wokerati and greatly enjoyed this book and somewhat remarkably made me dislike Farage less and even admire somethings about him. A considerable achievement in view of my clearly stated position (what others might see as prejudices).
Crick is a very fair minded and seems to me to give considerable care in presenting evidence from both sides rather than just giving his own conclusions/views.
If, like me, you are a remainer and think that Farage has been the main enabler of massive self harm on the country and are put off by reading/listening to a book about him I would recommend you put aside that and listen/read to this.
The narrator ‘puts on’ voices to distinguish who says what. It works, in fact it works very well, which has not been my experience with other audiobooks.
The best £2.95 (got in audio sale) I have spent for a while.

Excellent Narrator

One of the best narrators I’ve heard on Audible. Fights shy of impersonation but differentiates the key voices of the main characters brilliantly.

A good book

The man is an opportunist, authoritarian and a drunk. It's the conclusion I draw from this biography.
The book is well written and narrated.

A very - perhaps too - fair assessment

Like much of Michael Crick’s work, this got under the skin of the subject without being either a hatchet job or hagiography. He is unafraid to point out Farage’s many flaws, inconsistencies and hypocrisies while acknowledging his central role in a seismic change in British politics (both through skill and some luck). Even as a long-term observer (and opponent) of Farage there was much to learn, not least about his ruthless approach to party management. Farage is not a figure I will ever admire, but one who I now understand better and who has undoubted skills and talents. Narration is good - an important element that too often spoils a good audiobook.

Balanced and Comprehensive

This is a very balanced and reasonable account of the facinating life of Nigel Farage. This could be seen as surprising since it written by a prominent Channel 4 political journalist. This is a must read/listen for anyone who is interested in modern political history and the story of Brexit. The author clearly spoke to a huge number of sources from various stages of Farage's life which helps to build a deeper and nuanced understanding of his true character rather than just his public image.
