Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A gripping tale of heroic failure during the Dieppe Raid of 1942.

On the moonless night of 18 August 1942, a flotilla pushes out into the flat water of the Channel. They are to seize the German-held port of Dieppe and hold it for at least 24 hours, showing the Soviets the Allies were serious about a second front and to get experience ahead of a full-scale invasion.

But confidence turned to carnage with nearly two thirds of the attackers dead, wounded or captured. Operation Jubilee - the Royal Air Force's biggest battle since 1940 - has drama from start to finish, human folly and tragedy in spades and a fast, tight narrative with heroes at every level. The raid was both a disaster and a milestone in the narrative of the war - it had powerful lessons and far-reaching consequences that paved the way to D-Day.

Using first-hand testimony and recently declassified source material from archives across several countries, best-selling author Patrick Bishop's account of this gallant endeavour reveals the big picture and unearths telling details, establishing definitively Operation Jubilee's place in history.

Arresting and Moving

This is an arresting and, at times, moving account of the Dieppe Raid. As usual, Peter Noble’s brilliant performance enhances the narrative. Highly recommended.

Authoritative

Seminal account of the politics, the planning, execution and aftermath of the Dieppe raid. From the extraordinary bravery of the troops on the ground to the strategists & commanders who oversaw it (& the subsequent buck passing & scapegoating). It also dispels some myths on the way .

Noble is one of the best narrators around and as always strikes the right tone.

A fine book in every respect

Another winner from Patrick Bishop. A really moving WW11 story of the very brave men sent to raid this channel port in a venture that failed to achieve almost every objective. Not because of any fault of the troops but because of things outside of their control e.g. Planning, out of date enemy defence information and much more. Patrick tells the whole story with his wealth of his knowledge and experience as a military historian. The Canadians, in their first experience of battle, are deserving of huge credit for their courageous contribution and sacrifice in this valiant venture. I found the short epilogue to bring the book to a close particularly moving and appropriate
Thoroughly recommended

A Must Read

A comprehensive and moving account of a battle that is unfairly but commonly summarised in a few sentences. Here are the details of why and who as well as how. Allied, German and civilian view all given appropriate attention. A fitting tribute. Very well read by Peter Noble. I will listen again and never forget. Recommended.
