About this listen
*** THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER ***
In a beautiful southern Spanish town, where the sea sparkles and orange blossoms scent the air, the gates of a brand new apartment complex, La Joya de Andalucía, glide open to welcome the new owners. Anna and Austen MacDonald, an Irish couple, are preparing to enjoy their retirement to the full. But the demands of family cause problems they have never foreseen and shake their marriage to the core. Sally-Ann Connolly Cooper, a feisty Texan mother of two young teenagers, is reeling from her husband's infidelity. La Joya becomes a place of solace for Sally-Ann, in more ways than one. Eduardo Sanchez, a haughty Madrileño, has set out with single-minded determination to become El Presidente of the complex's management committee. But pride comes before a fall. Jutta Sauer Perez, a sophisticated German who aspires to own her very own apartment in La Joya, works hard to reach her goal. Then the unthinkable happens. As their lives entwine and friendships and enmities develop, it becomes apparent that La Joya is not quite the haven they all expect it to be....

Life in the sun
Where does Orange Blossom Days rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Pretty good. Good story. Kept my attention. I used to live in Spain so wanted so made me want to go back and live there again. The Spanish was pretty good and easily translatable if necessary. The characters were believable but hated the voice used for the Texans☹️
Who was your favorite character and why?
Anna. I'm Irish! she made me homesick and wishing I was back in Dublin!
Which character – as performed by Jilly Bond – was your favourite?
As above
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Paradise found and lost

Took a while to get going but worth it in the end
Orange Blossom Days is the combined intertwined stories of several people who all invest in an apartment in Spain, spread over 5 or so years. There's a few time jumps, which I'm not normally a huge fan of as it makes it hard to keep track of things but the author made it work in this case.
It did take me the entire first half of the book to really get into this story, as there was a lot of revisiting characters' pasts just to explain something that was happening in the present, but once the back story was established the last half of the book was enthralling. I devoured it, just so I could find out what happened to the characters, and I was pleased to encounter a few unexpected plot twists along the way.
The narration was fair to good, with incredibly overpowering Texan accents and Irish accents that sounded Scottish but they didn't detract too much from the story. And the Spanish pronunciations and accents were pretty on point overall.
This is my first Patricia Scanlan book, and it won't be my last :)

Thoroughly enjoyed it
Not my usual sort of book but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well read, well written & plenty of well rounded characters. Generally a ‘feel good’ story - would make an excellent holiday read.

Narration dodgy but good story
Enjoyed the idea of the story and the writing but the awful narration ruined it in places especially the attempts at Texan and Irish accents which sounded much more Scottish! Some female characters sounded like men.
Do authors not listen to the recordings once done? If it was my book I’d want to listen to make sure the characters were believable when narrated. Quite off putting at times.

good fun
well narrated, the Irish accent stopped being Scottish half way through. rather unsatisfactory ending, I would have liked to hear a little more about the characters' lives after the book. A sign that I was engaged by their lives I suppose. maybe a sequel is in the offing?
