Summary
Continuing the Deep Space Nine saga - an original novel from New York Times best-selling author David R. George III!
At the end of 2385, in a significant shift of its goals from military back to exploratory, Starfleet sent Captain Benjamin Sisko and the crew of the USS Robinson on an extended mission into the Gamma Quadrant. Tasked with a yearlong assignment to travel unknown regions, they set out to fulfill the heart of Starfleet's charter: to explore strange new worlds and to seek out new life and new civilizations.
But now, three months into the mission, their first contact with an alien species comes in the form of an unprovoked attack on the Robinson. With the ship's crew suddenly incapacitated, 78 of the 1,300 aboard are abducted - including Sisko's daughter, Rebecca. But Rebecca had already been kidnapped years earlier by a Bajoran religious zealot, part of a sect believing that her birth fulfilled the prophecy of the arrival of the Infant Avatar. Does her disappearance now have anything to do with the harrowing events of the past? And for what purposes have these enemies taken Sisko's daughter and the rest of the missing?

The narrator is So GOOD
It took me some days to get through this but I found myself coming back continuously to find out what happened next. The stories are told in a non linear manner.. starts in a past timeline then to what appears to be present day continuous then returns to the past then back to present.. can be a bit annoying but the overall story gets fleshed out in the long run and the plot itself is quite strong though it takes a while to gain momentum. The story centres around the Avatar and there's more than one antagonist but the main one is a paranoid psychopath and there's some disturbing themes to do with descriptions of violent acts towards a child. There's also times when things get rather too technical and I can't quite understand what's actually happening and an image would have helped like when they reached the artificial world with the Glant and there was a part of the world that was supposed to frozen water that they had to get through or how they could beam so many children into small roundabouts. Besides having a hard time being still for too long my mind is rather imaginative and can wander sometimes so I try to fill the blanks in myself but I suppose that's what happens with "science fiction" and that's the essence of these star trek shows! I had also never heard of "nell space" (?) or reverse tractor beam before this audiobook. The narrator Robert Petkoff however keeps my attention alive throughout. I've listened to many a fiction audio and radio dramas not necessarily to do with star trek and there's usually more than one person and there's sound effects in the background so for there to be just one person with no background sounds and still keep it interesting is definitely an important skill. He does a brilliant Sisko and AVery Brooks himself would be proud I think xd His voice for Rebecca is hilarious as well. Unfortunately Audible gives no suggestions of what other books in the saga to check out next so I'll have to hunt for them! I would recommend this for the narrator alone and also of course as a way to still reconnect with the DS9 universe if you're a fan like myself

Another great story set in multiple timelines
I really enjoyed this book it has great storylines and great characters. I especially like the gamma quadrant storyline with the strange new life and civilisation, and the dangers that causes for the characters on the ‘Robinson ‘ Sisko’s ship. I don’t want to give too much away, but the aliens in this book make this a very good story and I really enjoyed listening to this book.

The second half the the reward for getting through the first half
I have to admit that I really struggled to get through the fist 4-5h of this audiobook. It just didn’t captivate me.
Throughout the fist half of the book we follow three storylines. The first is Sisko on a ship that encounters an alien species that steals the children of the crew, the second is the kidnapping of Rebecca Sisko at an earlier point of time, and the third follows a very dislikable and slightly crazy Bajoran.
Without wanting to spoil anything, two storylines merge and the moment that happens, it’s a lot more enjoyable to listen to.
What I did love was the way the audiobook is narrated, the end however was a little lacking because both storylines come to the same conclusion and while it’s interesting the first time, the second time we do expect it to happen and it gets boring.
All in all not a bad book at all but I don’t think I would listen to it again.
