About this listen

The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution.

The heart-stopping follow-up to These Violent Delights, an imaginative, alluring retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in 1920s Shanghai.

After sacrificing her relationship with Roma to protect him from the blood feud, Juliette has been a girl on the warpath. One wrong move, and her cousin will step into usurp her place as the Scarlet Gang's heir. The only way to save the boy she loves from the wrath of the Scarlets is to have him want her dead for murdering his best friend in cold blood. If Juliette were actually guilty of the crime Roma believes she committed, his rejection might sting less.

Roma is still reeling from Marshall's death, and his cousin, Benedikt, will barely speak to him. Roma knows it's his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and he's determined to set things right - even if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure.

Then a new monstrous danger emerges in the city, and though secrets keep them apart, Juliette must secure Roma's cooperation if they are to end this threat once and for all. Shanghai is already at a boiling point: the Nationalists are marching in, whispers of civil war brew louder every day and gangster rule faces complete annihilation. Roma and Juliette must put aside their differences to combat monsters and politics, but they aren't prepared for the biggest threat of all: protecting their hearts from each other.

Unnecessary sequel

I really liked the first one but this... this was just unnecessary. Basically exactly the same thing that happened in "These Violent Delights" but dragged out. I'm rarely bored reading/listening to books but damn this couldn't end. It wasn't bad logistically (mostly), so I'm giving it a 3, but it was really unnecessary. The end of this one could've easily been the end of the first one and we'd avoid hundreds of pages bringing nothing to the story. 🥱

Amazing!

I enjoyed the story very much and now onto the next book.
But although the book was really good the narrator not so much. Sometimes I had problem with understanding what the narrator was saying! Too much whispering! This constant “shshhhshs” in my ears was getting on my nerves!

Please Place Narrator in Same Room as Recorder

Someone, for the love of God, please tell the narrator to SPEAK UP.

I should not have to sit here, next to my phone and turn the volume up everytime someone other than the main character speaks. But for some God forsaken reason the narrator insists on WHISPERING anytime another character speaks. Its not some dialect she's taking on for the characters either, as I know this is of course set in China. But the Russian love interest, the foreign diplomats, everyone whispers.

And its just infuriating to listen too.

Hint for audiobook producers: but your narrators in the SAME FUCKING ROOM as the recording device. Results will generally be much higher quality.

My first time ever reviewing an audiobook directly on audible, but this just isn't good enough.

First time ever requesting a refund for the credit, but I shouldn't have to sit wanting to rip my ears out when I'm trying to enjoy a book,

For the record, adored the first book [read the physical copy] and I'm really enjoying the storyline of this one. But I just cannot stand the narrator, I'm sorry.
