Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A deeply candid and refreshingly spirited memoir of identity lost and found from the star of the iconic film Dirty Dancing

“Jennifer Grey peels back all the artifice, denial, obfuscation, and myriad assumptions and exposes a gorgeous, human portrait of her life.”—Jamie Lee Curtis

“We all know Jennifer Grey as a talented actress, but Out of the Corner introduces us to a gifted writer.”—Michael J. Fox

In this beautiful, close-to-the bone account, Jennifer Grey takes listeners on a vivid tour of the experiences that have shaped her, from her childhood as the daughter of Broadway and film legend Joel Grey, to the surprise hit with Patrick Swayze that made her America’s sweetheart, to her inspiring season eleven win on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

Throughout this intimate narrative, Grey richly evokes places and times that were defining for a generation—from her preteen days in 1970s Malibu and wild child nights in New York’s club scene, to her roles in quintessential movies of the 1980s, including The Cotton Club, Red Dawn, and her breakout performance in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. With self-deprecating humor and frankness, she looks back on her unbridled, romantic adventures in Hollywood. And with enormous bravery, she shares the devastating fallout from a plastic surgery procedure that caused the sudden and stunning loss of her professional identity and career. Grey inspires with her hard-won battle back, reclaiming her sense of self from a culture and business that can impose a narrow and unforgiving definition of female worth. She finds, at last, her own true north and starts a family of her own, just in the nick of time.

Distinctive, moving, and powerful, told with generosity and pluck, Out of the Corner is a memoir about a never-ending personal evolution, a coming-of-age story for women of every age.

Critic reviews

“What is truth? How does someone make sense of their life lived through a public lens? In Out of the Corner, Jennifer Grey peels back all the artifice, denial, obfuscation, and myriad assumptions and exposes a gorgeous, human portrait of her life, hard lived-in and fiercely fought for. Her chapter titles alone show the insights and whimsy that she brings to her memoir, along with the shattering public and private struggles and successes. It’s miles deep, sharply personal, bracingly honest—and if there’s anybody who deserves to step out of the corner into the light of her mind and indomitable spirit, it’s Jennifer Grey.”—Jamie Lee Curtis

“We all know Jennifer Grey as a talented actress, but Out of the Corner introduces us to a gifted writer. In reading her memoir, I understood the passion, love, and loss that has given shape to her life’s journey. Her narrative is nuanced, her words carefully chosen for maximum impact. She shares achingly human moments, like what it was like as a little girl to watch her father, the iconic Joel Grey, as he applied his greasepaint before taking the stage in Cabaret. Out of the Corner is a revelation, a work of emotional generosity and personal courage. It’s sneaky brilliant. Love it and love Jennifer. Baby got Book.”—Michael J. Fox

“The Dirty Dancing star cracks open her turbulent past in this searing and heartfelt debut . . . Grey emerges as a resilient star in her own story, candidly sharing with readers all her joy, confusion, and hard-won wisdom along the way. Fans won’t want to miss this.”Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Nobody puts Baby in a corner!

I absolutely loved this book. I had no idea of the trials and tribulations that Jennifer Grey has been through since the iconic Dirty Dancing movie. I know every line of that movie, and now I have a greater understanding of one half of the partnership that was Patrick and Jennifer.
Beautifully written, fantastic narration, I couldn’t get enough of this and listened in long, luxurious chunks. I have now ordered a hard copy of the book to keep. Loved it!! ❤️

Fantastic!

Jennifer Grey has an amazing life story, way beyond Dirty Dancing and Dancing With the Stars. A great experience to hear her narrate out herself. Highly recommended.

Brilliant memoir

I usually listen to my audiobooks in the car but this story had me gripped and I couldn't wait for my next foray out so I listening at home too. As a life long Dirty Dancing fan Jennifer's story sheds light on what happened before, during and after her Dirty Dancing experience. There are some really poignant moments in her story.

Brilliant

I loved this!! Bought it on a whim, big Dirty Dancing fan, and in these days of “cancel culture” I wondered what had happened to Jennifer Grey, and felt bad that everyone hated on her for a nose job. Her story gripped me. I absolutely loved her language and tone, she sounded like a friend telling you everything. Juicy details, touching emotions, delicate and sensitive touches, rawness, intensity, all brought together perfectly. You get a real sense of her life, and how wonderful it is that she rode out her difficulties and feels at home with herself now, truly out of her corner. I thank her for writing this, and reading this, and I’m so pleased to have heard it. Recommended!

A completely relatable life!

Minus me being famous if course, I really found myself relating Jennifer Grey like no one I've ever met or read. I too have been fueled with the last for boys, then men. A constant not knowing what will make me happy... drugs, drink? Then waking up one day and giving birth to my first born son I found the reason that life gives meaning. She had totally gave me an invite to my own life and mistakes. I love you Mz Grey...

What a surprise!

Such an enjoyable listen . It covers not only her time as Baby in Dirty Dancing ( I’ve seen it so many times, huge fan) but also so much that’s unknown about her life and career. On the lighter side , did anyone know she’d been engaged to Johnny Depp ? ! She narrates beautifully, and in fact the prose is so good ,I wondered if she wrote it all herself ..
If she did , she should try her hand at some fictional novels!
As you can tell , I really enjoyed this memoir.

nothing new

This is just another story from a born rich girl trying to get sympathy for her first world problems. I actually liked Jennifer Grey before this book. Her going on and on about her "problems" knowing she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth makes her look like a whiny snob.

Do yourself a favor and look up spoilers about her "Dirty Dancing" years and forget the rest.

Excellent listen

I’m wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. I know Jennifer Grey from her 80s movies. But since than I really haven’t followed her; so I thought why not I’ll give it a listen. I’m glad I did, her book chronicles her life, movies, relationships but she is very upfront and genuine about it. I found the book inspiring and I could relate. I would say give it a try i think you will really enjoy it.

The greatest coming of age story - at every age.

If you’re looking for juicy bits of Jennifer’s famous family, romances, friendships, and behind the scenes of Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing, and Dancing with the Stars, there’s plenty in this memoir to satisfy. But more than that, this book is one of the best self-help books I’ve ever read. Through her experiences, her example, Jennifer shows us how family, friends, love interests, societal images, fame, and Hollywood can pull anyone away from their authentic self, and how to get it back. A roadmap for learning to accept yourself and your life, to understand what is important for you at every stage of life from pre-teen to old-age (which she has not yet achieved), this book should be required reading for all of us.

Put Baby Back in the Corner

You have not learned, after all, that when you choose to become a mother, family and that child is the start of your life’s play. You drowned on and on about your life to come to the conclusion that your career is still paramount. Get over yourself. Perform the role you chose…that of a mother and wife. Too late to be selfish. No super for you until you can come out of your corner with renewed insight.

1 small chapter on Johnny depp

she apparently grew up in a very rich family in New York, it shows! she is very conceited. I don't know why but I ended up rolling my eyes alot through this book.

Changed My Opinion

For the majority of the book, I felt Jennifer Grey did a lot of complaining & blaming of others regarding her uptown problems. I found myself being annoyed and considered not finishing the book. Then I had to remind myself why I was interested in her story & always wondered why she altered her unique beauty. I loved Dirty Dancing and loved Jennifer's performance; watched it numerous times over the years. It was very disappointing when she changed her looks to satisfy others and/or to supposedly make herself more commercially desirable. The pressure that drove her to that decision must have been overwhelming, and the outcome must have been devastating, especially when on public display. When I got to the chapter on Dancing with the Stars, I turned to YouTube to see her performances. Wow! Just beautiful! Jennifer can certainly dance! Watching her performances and how those few minutes of viewing brightened my day, I thank Jennifer for sharing her talents, and her story.

OMG, so good!!!!

Jennifer’s memoir is a wonderful read. I enjoyed it very much, especially her epilogue. Her words resonated with me and made me feel so much better about where I am in life and what is next to come. I am 53 years old and feeling as if my life is almost over, and who knows it could be as no one knows what the future holds and I could die tomorrow, She made me feel as if this second half of my life is a beginning to new and wonderful adventures. Something to be celebrated; instead of feeling nostalgic for the years gone, Jennifer says slow down the best is yet to come! Thank you you’ve made a huge impact on my psyche and my thinking of the future. I’m not old and dead I’m going places and I’m excited. Thank you, you’re Wonderful!
