Summary

Out of the Silence is a powerful revenge thriller which will appeal to fans of authors like Victoria Selman, Chris Collet and J.B. Turner.

Star investigative reporter Ralph Buchanan’s glory days are behind him. His newspaper has banished him abroad, not knowing the greatest moment of his long career is waiting for him there.

When Simone Jasnin asks him to help expose a grave injustice, he finds himself embroiled in a harrowing tale that began in a dusty rural settlement, setting in motion a chain of events that will change the lives of everyone involved.

Seven years later, members of a prominent family are being brutally murdered. The only clue is a hand-carved wooden bangle left at the scene of each crime.

As the list of suspects grows and the tension mounts, Ralph realises the answers might be closer to home than he ever thought possible. Solving the mystery will put him back on top, but at what cost?

Heartbreakingly Perfect

Out of the Silence was such a brilliant read that I'm 'double dipping', read the book and listened on Audible. The story is so intense, I believe it's one you could go back to again and again and every time would find a new emotion and nuance from the tale. Although we learn a great deal about Ralph, the story really centres around Afra and the culture connected to marriage in certain countries. One of the contrasts that stood out for me way more on Audible than it had when I read the book was the paradox of Ralph and Afra's lives. The downward spiral and ravaging of Afra's life is juxtaposed against Ralph's upwards climb to greater achievements, not necessarily as a journalist, but more successful as a human being. Afra becomes less and less human, not even valued as a person, less even than a possession. And through it all we have Jamil, and the rise of one man who took a chance and made the most of the most fantastic opportunity life could have thrown at him. This is so poignant, such an emotional book, I defy anyone to listen without a lump in their throat and a tear in their eye. David McCallion turns in a fine performance, which perfectly compliments that eloquence of Mr Mullen's words. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Bravo Mr Mullen, 5 stars from me.

very depressing and so very long

not sure about the Scottish Pakistani accents, but it is well written, and deals with issues which should be made known to the world. I did find it too long. He could have made it a fast paced read, at half the length, instead it drags, with a lot of unnecessary detail. You need to pay attention to the beginning, as the names are important. in summary I felt like he was trying to do a kite runner style book, which didn't quite succeed.

The oppression of women in Pakistan!

This was not quite what I was expecting from the Mystery, Thriller, Suspense genre listing or the books synopsis, as the crimes [honour killings] and the Scottish investitive journalist's involvement don't occur till nearly half-way through, part 3 of the book. Never-the-less, this is a story well worth listening to, one that will stay with me.
Out of the Silence is partially a sorrowful love story. Poor village boy Jamil loves equally poor village girl Afra; girl is sold [bride price] into an arranged marriage; heartbroken boy gives her half of a set of twelve ebony bangles promising "Where you are, I am ...", then leaves the village to make his way in the world. Both end up in the city, Lahore, unaware of each others presence there, hers is an awful fate, his good fortune. The stories mystery element lies years later when a series of revenge attacks against one family start, their trade mark, a single bangle left at the crime scene. Who are the perpetrators? In the end it's a very satisfactory answer. The washed up journalist's role, a red herring.
This well written novel's backbone is men's barbaric treatment of women in Pakistan, their oppression, degradation. It's at times a harrowing tale because though a work of fiction, it's roots are founded on truth, on conduct that's still occurring in muslim countries & communities world wide.

Excellent story line

Such a well written story about a very important issue. Characters came to life as the story unfolded. One of the best books I have listened to.

Interesting mystery

I enjoyed the cleverly written vengeance killing, how it is carried out and really making them pay for their appalling treatment. I didn’t guess who did it either and I liked the characters in the story.

The gravity of of storey

A griping tale, maybe hinged on truth. Not my usual listen. Did not guess the conclusion.
