About this listen
Admittedly small and vulnerable, PT boats were, nevertheless, fast - the fastest craft on the water during World War II - and Dick Keresey's account of these tough little fighters throws new light on their contributions to the war effort. As captain of PT 105, the author was in the same battle as John F. Kennedy when Kennedy's PT 109 was rammed and sunk. The famous incident, Keresey says, has often been described inaccurately and the PT boat depicted as unreliable and ineffective. This book helps set the record straight by presenting an authentic picture of PT boats that draws on the author's experience at Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Bougainville, and Choiseul Island. Action-filled, his account describes evading night bombers, rescuing coast watchers and downed airmen, setting down Marine scouts behind Japanese lines, engaging in vicious gun battles with Japanese barges and small freighters, and contending with heat, disease, and loneliness. First published in 1996, the book has been hailed for telling an exciting yet fully accurate story.

The best war memoir I’ve read.
Brilliant, entertaining, thoughtful, factual, full of dry, sometimes sardonic, humour but balanced with human warmth. Hats off to the reader who gives an involved and measured performance to bring the text to life. Superb!

Fascinating story
I was captivated by the way the author described his experiences. He seemed brutally honest in admitting his failings, but then showing how he grew as a person. He went from an immature, arrogant youth to an experienced PTB skipper.

An important book -well read.
I do not have a high opinion of most US readers whose skills are far below those from the UK. However the reading here is first rate - interesting and conversational. The book itself is an important account of PT boat war in the Pacific and the author is both modest and truthful when recounting his experiences.

Fantastic book - wonderful performance
This is one of my favourite books on Audible. I have listened to countless military history and biographies, and this is right at the top of the list.
Less well known that PT109 (JFK's boat - he has a cameo role in the book) but equally important.
The performance by Sean Pratt is particularly commendable. He manages to put intonation and personality into the reading, without overshadowing the story.

Excellent
Excellent, quite a subtle not “gung Ho” account. The author does an excellent job of picking between the realities of combat and the ridiculousness of war. It gets a bit moving at the end.

PT105s War
A great story after a slow start. Well worth a read or listen. With memories of Jack Kennedy's boat PT109.

The story of a brave and modest hero
I was moved by the story of how he got through a dreadful time in history with grace and compassion
