Summary

Don’t be revolted, lead the revolt – preferably with a grin on your face and a tampon tucked proudly behind your ear.

Emma loathes her period. Really, she does. But there’s something she loathes even more: not being able to talk about it. Freely, funnily and honestly. Without men and women wrinkling their noses as if she’s pulled her tampon out and offered it as an hors d'oeuvre.

But somehow, despite women having had periods since the dawn of time, we’ve totally clammed up on anything to do with menstruation. Why, oh why, would we rather say ‘Auntie Flo’ than ‘period’? Why, in the 21st century, are periods still seen as icky? Why are we still so ignorant about such a fundamental bodily process?

Now, in Period., Emma draws on female experiences that will make you laugh, weep (and, most probably, squirm), in a fierce and funny rallying cry to smash this ridiculous taboo once and for all.

Because it’s about bloody time.

Period.

Interesting and empowering

Really enjoyed it - fascinating listen. It’s made me much more vocal about my own period and I hope that it encourages other people I work with to be less inhibited about theirs.

Had me on my toes!

A wonderful audiobook that mirrored so many feelings I had about periods, period sex and of course it was eye opening about the effects of period poverty. Thank you for your bluntness!

Eye opener

LOVED this book, found it really hard to ever stop listening to it! Emma is a brilliant narrator and it feels like you're having a chat over a cup of tea with a friend

It's a book males and females should read. I've always been a very open person, but there were things in the book that made me realise I still have shame over my periods.... Well not anymore! Opened my eyes up, and makes me want to tell everyone about every period I go through!

100% must read!

Hysterically Funny

Emma Barnett delves into this topic in a humorous, relatable, and informative way. It’s definitely a helpful stepping stone towards seeking more information on the subject.

The flow (pun intended) works well with audio narration.

I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a lighthearted and emotional tale on periods from the perspective of the author.

Good listen

Very good narration of an interesting, informative book. This would be a great listen for anyone who has a young daughter or son, anyone working with young women and men, anyone interested in learning something about the world and human fellows living in it, anyone wanting to learn something about themselves (even if, like me, they think they know it all!).

Funny, informative, shocking, moving, important. So glad Emma read it herself - her voice is the perfect tonic

Excellent!

I love how Emma gets straight to the point on so many matters in this book. She has researched extensively and I couldn't imagine anyone else writing or narrating this book. She could have quite as easily drew it all out and went for absolute nitty gritty detail but she lets you know the facts and gets to the point all without missing a single detail. The mark of a truly great journalist/writer.

My better half had bought this book and asked if I wanted to read it. Being a slow reader I declined but was really intrigued that someone was writing about periods (something that happens to more than half the population, yes men you are not the majority) frankly and honestly and the content explores so much more into exactly that fact and beyond.
As a white male in (my now) 30s, I very much am a bit of a nosey bastard that likes to stay informed about aspects of life that affect myself and my loved ones. So this was perfect insight into a world I will never fully understand but try to on the most basic human and compassionate levels that I can.

Thank you for such a brilliant listen/read Emma. opened my eyes to a lot of things and reaffirms a lot more of what should be happening to make a change of how the world approaches periods.

A must listen

With this book, Emma cements all of the reasons she is one of the UKs most brilliant journalists and champion of women. It is insightful, funny, made me angry, made me sad, and above all else, made me listen intently and want to take action now I’ve finished it. I strongly recommend this book 🩸
