About this listen

'Offers hope and good sense in equal measure'
Ian Bremmer

'A sensible plan for reform that can help us create a fairer and more equitable world'
Sheryl Sandberg

Problems are mounting.
We face sputtering growth, an escalating climate emergency, worsening inequality, poor policy responses, increasing nationalism and a decline in global co-operation.
But a permacrisis need not be permanent.

In this book, three of the most internationally respected and experienced thinkers of our time, Gordon Brown, Mohamed A. El-Erian and Michael Spence, writing with Reid Lidow, explain where we’ve gone wrong and set out what could be done to bring about a brighter future for generations to come. They look beyond today’s headlines and political rhetoric to offer a bold, big-picture vision and nuanced, achievable solutions for fixing our broken approaches to growth, economic management, and governance.

The world is changing. What that change looks like is up to us.

Critic reviews

'Three of the world’s greatest economic leaders have put their brilliant minds together to produce this insightful playbook for getting out of the permacrisis we seem mired in. It’s a timely guide to the type of co-operation, both at home and internationally, that is now vitally necessary’ (Walter Isaacson)
‘Permacrisis recognises that a growth policy that also addresses issues like gender equity and climate change can create a sustainable economy that raises all boats. This hopeful book puts forward a sensible plan for reform that can help us create a fairer and more equitable world’ (Sheryl Sandberg)
‘This excellent book presents a new growth model that is sustainable and inclusive, and where technology lifts jobs for all. Don’t miss reading it!’ (Nouriel Roubini)
‘Brown, El-Erian and Spence show us in vivid detail what needs fixing in a world of perpetual economic crisis. More importantly, they provide solutions that even today’s chronically dysfunctional governments can credibly reach. Permacrisis offers hope and good sense in equal measure’ (Ian Bremmer)
‘A bold and ambitious agenda for change to create a more sustainable and equitable world’ (James Manyika)
