Summary

It is AD 25. Pirate ships strike terror in the hearts of those who brave the seas of the Roman Empire.

When young Telemachus gets the chance to join the crew of the merchant ship Selene, he's delighted to escape the rough streets of Piraeus. He knows little of the dangers of life at sea. And even past hardship has not prepared him for the terror on board when a pirate ship appears on the horizon....

The fight is bloody, but the result is never in doubt. Then the victorious pirate chief, Bulla, offers the beaten men a cruel choice: join us, or die. After surviving a brutal initiation rite, Telemachus impresses his new captain with his resourcefulness and strength and swiftly rises through the pirate ranks. But dangerous rivals talk of mutiny and murder. While Prefect Canis, notorious commander of the imperial fleet, will stop at nothing to take control of the Adriaticum from the pirate brotherhood.

Could Telemachus be the man to lead the pirate brotherhood and challenge Rome?

Moral Quandry

Should Pirates be treated as heroes for a story ?
While I have always enjoyed Simon Scarrows stories never missing one, I find using Pirates with very twisted senses of morals as 'Heroes' a quandary. The Roman soldiers who are depicted in this are m.j mediocre at best and lack the well known tactics and discipline depicted in earlier stories. It's a shame but I do not think I will continue with this series. I hope Mr Scarrow returns to what he does best.

Masterful performance, solid tale

Jonathan Keeble could bring anything to life, but doesn't have to work too hard with this one. The setting and structure of the story is enjoyable and feeds the imagination, and generally quite a good fun read, if the dialogue is a bit one dimensional and the lead character a bit uninspiring, but amazingly lands on his feet.

Nice easy listening.

OK so it's a bit boys own but nice easy listening and the narration by JK is, as usual, excellent.

I really wanted to like this almost prequel tie-in to The Eagles Prophecy.

Keeble, as always, awesome.

The story, where to start?

It feels like Scarrow, but if also feels plastic.

I expected so much more from this, it feels flat and a bit empty, some of the characters are quirky, but I feel that is down to Keeble on the format.

I expected more colour and I got sepia.

I will follow the short stories, but only thanks to the exchange function available on audible.

Kind of disappointed.

Great story but...

As ever Simon delivers a great story and the narration is excellent. However given that the chief protagonist is a pirate with all the inhuman nastiness that involves, I constantly had to suppress the lack of sympathy for his ‘plight’ and regularly didn’t agree with the general intimation that the Roman’s were the ‘bad guys’.

Very disappointing

I'm a big fan of Simon Scarrow and I'd pre ordered this.
I just couldn't at any level or at any point in the story empathise with the main character, who's a pirate running round kidnapping killing and torturing people. Yes, Macro and Cato do that too, but they're soldiers doing their job in violent times so you're on their side.
This guy's just a thief and I wanted him to get caught.
I wouldn't buy a sequel to this.

Interesting take.

This is very much a Simon Scarrow story. We have a clear-cut hero although in this case the hero is actually a criminal. While the brutality of elements of the Roman Empire would definitely lead to revolt sometimes it’s tricky to empathise with a hero and his group who are fundamentally murderers and thieves. Having said that, putting some of these things aside I enjoyed the story.
