Summary
The Surrays and their five children form a prolific writing machine, with scores of treatises, reviews and crime thrillers published under their family name. Following a convergence of the whole household at their Oxfordshire home, Ruth—the middle sister—decides to spend some weeks there recovering from the pressures of the writing life. Their next return is heralded by the tragic news that Ruth has taken her life after an evening at the Surrays' hosting a set of publishers and writers, one of whom is named as Ruth's literary executor in the will she left behind.
Despite suspicions, the verdict at the inquest is suicide—but when Ruth's brother Richard receives a letter from the deceased which was delayed in the post, he enlists the help of CID Robert Macdonald to investigate what could only be an ingeniously planned murder.

Over acted and badly sound engineered.
The narration drops off as if you're not in range of the signal (for example: 22:43 of Chapter9). At first I thought I was imagining it. Very annoying and unexpected since it's a recent production. Maybe David Thorpe is too busy to take care of the details.
It's a damn shame!

Good story let down by production/ editing of the audio
The story is very much of the era an a jolly good romp…
However the sound fading in and out, losing the beginnings and endings of words suggests that the production or editing process are at fault unless the narrator was wandering around the room towards and away from the microphone. Such a shame. I will try one more of these hoping it’s an aberration simply because currently I have no other option as a blind person unable to read braille fluently enough yet (started learning January) otherwise I’d get the kindle edition. So yes this poor quality recording is better than AI reading a kindle to me but only just.

Fairly average
I found this one a bit strange. The initial set up, involving the presumed suicide of a member of a family of intellectuals was interesting, but it takes a strange turn in the second half, with a chase to the Scottish Islands.
The actual 'whodunnit' is fairly easy to solve, with the identity of the criminal being fairly obvious.
The narration is rather flat and pedestrian

Twists and turns
Excellent story with lots of twists and turns. Kept me guessing right to the end.
Possibly the best Lorac I have listened to up to date. Good presentation. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

What a find!
I heard about ECR Lorac on the Shedunnit podcast and decided to try her work. This is the earliest (by original publication date) on Audible. It’s excellent, we’ll written and genuinely intriguing, and I don’t mind that her detective is a less ‘showy’ protagonist than Poirot or Wimsey. Although there aren’t many of her books in print or on Audible this is my new Golden Age listen and I’m moving onto the next available. Hopefully a few more will be reissued.

The first Lorac book I couldn't finish
I found most of the characters irritating & the storyline tedious. And David Thorpe being far from my favourite narrator was the last straw...
