Summary

From the best-selling author of The Templars, Dan Jones' epic new history tells nothing less than the story of how the world we know today came to be built.

Across 16 chapters, blending Dan Jones' trademark gripping narrative style with authoritative analysis, Powers and Thrones shows how, at each stage in this story, successive Western powers thrived by attracting - or stealing - the most valuable resources, ideas and people from the rest of the world. It casts new light on iconic locations - Rome, Paris, Venice, Constantinople - and it features some of history's most famous and notorious men and women.

This is a book written about - and for - an age of profound change, and it asks the biggest questions about the West both then and now. Where did we come from? What made us? Where do we go from here?

Quality again

The largest in scope of any Dan Jones project that I've encountered. As a consequence, events can be tricky to keep in your head especially with an audiobook, but if this is a fault of the author's it is only in ambition.

Superbly written with a view to taking you into the lives of its subjects, definite recommendation for anyone interested in the period or who has previously enjoyed Dan Jones' writings

A really excellent account of the period

I found this account of a period of which I knew far too little. My school boy history was anglo-centric in the extreme and this book gave much wider and much needed deeper perspective.

Vast in scope

I do enjoy Dan Jones' books. Given the enormous time frame it deals with, it is by definition selective in the topics covered. I'm sure some would quibble about what has been included and what is excluded but that, after all, is the author's perogative. It is a long book but kept my attention all the way through.

A really wonderful overview of 1,000 years of our world

This book has filled in many gaps for me and really helped peace together a huge part of time in Europe in the world.

Fantastic read

Really one of the most engaging histories I have read/heard. Albeit very comprehensive though due to it big span of the period and the various angles of different players,
Countires, religions and cultures, not an overly detailed history of the middle ages, which makes it an easy read. Very well narrated by author. Loved it

Worth the length

Not a chronological review of the events and characters of the middle ages but a very interesting explanation of the social and cultural nature of the European middle ages, incredibly wide ranging and stimulating.

Great dash through European history up to 1530

I am a fan of the author's works and this does not disappoint. It was particularly sobering to listen to the book as events in Ukraine unfolded. There were so many compare and contrast moments.
Good narration style, although I did wince at the pronunciation of some German towns, particularly Mainz.
