About this listen

Get more out of life with less effort

You've heard of people living "the good life". They always seem to have plenty of time, money, and energy to fulfill their goals and dreams. Their secret? A simple life.

Pure and Simple is based on the 80/20 principle and suggests steps to simplify your life, accomplish more, and increase the quality of your time and efforts - all with less work!

Learn how and why you should:

  • Limit your choices in everyday life, and discover four areas of your life that can be greatly improved
  • Declutter your physical and digital space - this doesn't mean living with less than 100 things
  • Use the golden rules of simplification, and make decisions more quickly and with less effort
  • Cut unnecessary time commitments, and have the time to reach your goals and fulfill your dreams
  • Build a positive outlook, and learn to overcome a negative mind-set to better enjoy your life

All these suggestions are laid out to help you shift away from the frustrating mind-set of "fixing" your life by working harder, gaining more possessions, and holding on to what's truly limiting you in life.

Each step is supported with research by leaders in psychology, behavioral studies, and neuroscience as well as examples of real habits by successful people such as Warren Buffet and President Obama.

Once you finish, you'll be better prepared to take your life to the next level. You'll be able to enjoy the simplicity and ease of a life without unnecessary and exhausting demands on your time and energy. More importantly, you'll be able to stick to your simple, new habits instead of defaulting back to complexity.

Meadows Delivers again*****

The heavyweight champion of Self Discipline enters the ring with his take on Simplicity!

Pure and Simple is the 8th title I've read from Meadows, all of which have been 'best in class' in their subject niche, so I was excited to see a title focusing on Simplicity, a topic I've been interested in for some time. I should also add I've read the majority of the big hitters in this space, from Elaine St James, Anthony Glenn, Mary Conroy, Brian Tracy, through to the top authors in the minimalist space. I was not to be disappointed here.

One of Meadows leading strengths is the breadth of topics and the amount of ground he can cover in relatively short works, which to me is the epitome of simplification. I've been guilty of selecting a longer title over a shorter one when weighing up how to use my one, valuable Audible credit all things being equal, but through Meadows work I've come to realise it's not a metric worth considering. He is able to cover more ground in a 2 hour listen than some authors cover in 10, with repetitive examples and unnecessary padding.

With so much ground covered in this short listen, I'll touch on the topics which made an impression on me, without giving away any spoliers

Analysis Paralysis, and the paradox of choice

The 80/20 principal

Culinary simplicity and compound exercises

Specialisation and focus

Relationships and comparison

How experiences have a higher social value that material possessions

Decluttering and working smarter, not harder

Atomic habits and systems

Television and Social Media

Delayed gratification, resilience, worrying and lies.

Hands down this is the only book to spend your valuable credit on this month in the simplicity category! Pure gold from Meadows as always!
