Summary

An unprecedented and intimate tour de force of new reporting on the Trump presidency facing a global pandemic, economic disaster and racial unrest, from Bob Woodward.

Woodward, the number one international best-selling author of Fear: Trump in the White House, has uncovered the precise moment the president was warned that the Covid-19 epidemic would be the biggest national security threat to his presidency. In dramatic detail, Woodward takes listeners into the Oval Office as Trump’s head pops up when he is told in January 2020 that the pandemic could reach the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 675,000 Americans.

In 17 on-the-record interviews with Woodward over seven volatile months - an utterly vivid window into Trump’s mind - the president provides a self-portrait that is part denial and part combative interchange mixed with surprising moments of doubt as he glimpses the perils in the presidency and what he calls the 'dynamite behind every door'. At key decision points, Rage shows how Trump’s responses to the crises of 2020 were rooted in the instincts, habits and style he developed during his first three years as president.

Revisiting the earliest days of the Trump presidency, Rage reveals how Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats struggled to keep the country safe as the president dismantled any semblance of collegial national security decision making. Rage draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with first-hand witnesses as well as participants’ notes, emails, diaries, calendars and confidential documents.

Woodward obtained 25 never-seen personal letters exchanged between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who describes the bond between the two leaders as out of a 'fantasy film'. Trump insists to Woodward he will triumph over Covid-19 and the economic calamity. 'Don’t worry about it, Bob. Okay?' Trump told the author in July. 'Don’t worry about it. We’ll get to do another book. You’ll find I was right.'

Excellent. Fair. Conclusive

Please, American voters, make sure Bob Woodward does not have to write a third book on POTUS Donald Trump.

Great listen, carefully told.

as a UK citizen, was slightly out of the loop for the Trump presidency and found it very interesting but hard to get into. Bob Woodward makes it accessible by letting sources speak for themselves where possible and breaking down more complex issues where necessary.

Absolutely enthralling listen.

Rage is an absolutely enthralling listen. It feels as though the listener has a seat in every room, taking in every conversation and observing the participants. Giving a much clearer picture of the events than we can glean from the news media. All this is done without un necessary comment, judgement or vitriol from the author or others who participated in the events portrayed. I can recommend it to any one who seriously wants to understand the current political decisions being made or not as the case may be without descending to the level of spurious gossip.

eye-watering and eye opening

The Trump presidency has been an unending series of controversies, so I listened to this book enthralled, wanting to know what I might discover about the byzantine dysfunction in Trump's personal life and his cabinet. I was not disappointed. I don't want to spoil anything but Bob really conveys the full confusion and hypocrisy inherent within many of 'the Donald's' policy decisions and gaffes, including topics such as the mishandling of COVID, the Russia inquiry, the Biden witch-hunt, the impeachment proceedings and foreign relations fall outs. Bob does an excellent job wrangling the seeming chaos of the past four years into a coherent narrative, detailing how Trump would, in true narcissistic fashion, woo prospective candidates for his cabinet, row with them, then discard them and devalue them, leaving a series of broken professional relationships, broken trusts and damaged reputations behind. His taciturn impulsive approach to correspondence with domestic and foreign people, organisations and governments alike is fully detailed and laid bare.

If there is anything surprising in this book it is just how little Trump seemed to have accomplished in the past four years, lurching from one problem to the next, always on the defensive, in many ways the Trump administrations incompetence mitigated some of the damage it could have done and would have liked to do! Another surprise was how open Trump seemed to be with Bob, seemingly blind to the extent of all his own failings. The book is surprisingly quite kind in it's approach to many of Trump's cabinet, giving many figures the full opportunity to give their side of the story, which is definitely a mark in its favour because Bob does come across as someone who did indeed go into writing the book with an open mind and tried to stick to the facts in his reporting, only adding to the weight and credibility of it's conclusions. The reading of the book is exemplary and it is an easy listen. I really enjoyed this book overall despite the dour subject matter and I would recommend this book, especially to any Americans whatever their political affiliation.

Petulant Child

Thoroughly enjoyed this book - unsettling as it was. There are so many stories about how Trump behaves that it is really difficult to tell fact from fiction. However it is more terrifying to actually hear what the president truly believes and thinks, sadly he lives up to his reputation. Very well written by Bob Woodward with great narration. The fact these interviews were all conducted over the last few months (during COVID 19) and prior to 2020 Election will be poured over for years to come - how did the most powerful country on the planet end up with such a leader? Every country has politicians who "could do better". Thankfully as democracies we have things called elections...

Inside the Mind of a Monster

This is an extraordinary book by an extraordinary journalist. I can only imagine that it was vanity on Trump‘s part that made him collaborate with this work. He comes out of it very badly – fractious, narcissistic, unpleasant, bullying. Most of all though, we get a firsthand account of what it is like to have a delusional maniac in the most powerful job in the most powerful nation on the work planet.

God help America!
