We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Summary
Separated from her ship, Major Trace Thakur is stranded on the reeh-occupied world of Rando. The native corbi have suffered beneath reeh tyranny for 800 years, and many have given up hope. But Trace needs the data stored in the reeh’s genetic technology and command center - the Rando Splicer - if she’s to learn how to save humanity from impending disaster, and is planning an assault against overwhelming odds. She’ll need help from the UFS Phoenix, though, which is caught in a ritual medieval battle to change the croma leadership that sees her crew embarking on a perilous journey across a warring desert continent. Should they fail, humanity could be just one of many species to die.

Good but convoluted and messy
I have enjoyed the spiral wars series, however with every book they get more convoluted and 'baggy'. This one is hard to follow as there are lots of different aliens and not enough time concentrated on the main characters (in my opinion). Some of the battle scenes are over indulged and go on for so long that I lost interest and just wanted the story to progress. I found the end somewhat unsatisfying, not quite a cliffhanger but not nicely rounded up either. Not sure if I will bother with the next one, would like to see what happens but having to wade through so much chaff can get tiresome.

Best one yet!
Spiral Wars was my first audible series I got into and I thought it was great. After Rando Splicer, and I have listened to other Sci-fi Military books, I realise it is excellent. The best in the genre to my knowledge! The plot of this one is a little unusual in the series; 2 separate storylines one of which is a road trip. But they both play off each other so well and keep the action going. Shepherd has a real knack for character and world building and John Lee is a great narrator. Get the rest of the series then this one! Cant wait for the next one.

An unnecessary entry
The UFS Phoenix is now so far off course from their self appointed mission even the characters are starting to question what they're trying to achieve.
This is book 6 and we're now onto our second alien leadership contest. A new round of factions, leaders, characters of dubious loyalty and various alien ways of deciding who gets to be in charge.
The entire contents of this could have been covered in a single chapter or even a few paragraphs, everything else is filler to pad out a full novel. Nothing changes for humanity and little is learned about the AI threat.

Well written but lost in the politics of uninteresting alien cultures
I am a big fan of Joel Shepards spiral series, but I won't continue the series after this one. All the plotlines in the series are getting very tedious. There are too many cliff hangers and too little resolution. Stix's technological superiority also makes this addition wanting of a advosary who can contend with the phoenix crew. The challenges in front of the crew are too easy, and make the crew's adventure seem like a casual exploration of alien cultures that are all together in uninteresting and rather dull.
Rando slicer is a weak addition to the series.

alien history lectures plus fight scenes
On average, each line of dialogue is accompanied by four paragraphs of alien history lesson. Plot barely moves for the first 20 chapters while we are introduced to many characters who may or may not survive the book. Lisbeth appears in a throwaway chapter just to let us know that's she's doing great. Good news: Caught a first glimmer that this series may actually have an end.

A Tale of Two Planets
Sublime narration once again. Typically the chapters are either set on RANDO with Trace and Giddy or on a Croma planet with Erik, Styx, etc. However, one chapter is set in human space with the Fleet triumvirate, and another chapter is set in Parren space with Lisbeth. Chapters on Rando are grim and desperate with nary a smile in sight, but chapters on Croma are lighter, adventuresome, and sometimes funny in a snarky way.
Funniest scenes go to Peanut. Snarkiest lines go to Styx.
As far as character development, it’s all about young Skah losing his baby teeth, Trace becoming a stone, and Tiga (the female Corbi rebel) becoming nuanced and much wiser.
The plot chugs along nicely, like a train, and ends with a few nice surprises and a good idea of what’s to come in the next book.
Quibbles: The author tends to interrupt the flow of action sequences with expository or reflective statements. The dark government secret trope is getting repetitive across books.

Amazing
Great world building, interesting alien politics, thoughts about life and death and excellent combat. At times very emotional which brings subtance to struggle for survival of all species. I really enjoyed this book. Sum of its parts make a greater whole. I've listened for +100 scifi books and I think this might be the best so far. Narrator is really growing on me. Top 3 in the business for sure.

Filler Book in the Series
The series was largely excellent until Rando Splicer. This whole book feels like it was written to fill in the history lesson of the Croma, Reeh, and Corbeye. Which is strange as the last book ends on an incredible note. This one instead continues on with a whimper.
The slow pace continues through the rest of the book. Lots and lots of background history on the new aliens. I ended up largely passively listening to this book while doing other tasks. There wasn’t really any moments that made me stop and rewind in case I missed something.
Overall, the book was well written and the performance was good. I am just hoping the next book in the series gets back to some of the earlier mystery, space opera, action, and intrigue roots that made the early books great.

way too grim and depressing
the author has lost his golden touch. the last two books had already gone in that direction -- in hindsight.
but his insistence to make everything "gritty" just turns fun battles into a dark and depressing slaughter where no hope or anything survives.
it's just death and decay. this isn't what I signed up for.
there are already infinite books out there doing that.
to the author: nobody outside of sadists and sociopaths enjoys this level of everyone dying constantly.
wtf is wrong with you? bring back the atmosphere of book 1-3
