Summary

In August 1992 a young mother and her two small sons were brutally murdered in the woods behind their home. Her neighbour, Andrew Gyle, was convicted of the crime and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Now, 23 years later, a macabre discovery throws new light on the case. Could there have been a shocking miscarriage of justice?

DCI Colin Anderson and his partner, DI Costello, uncover serious discrepancies in the original investigation; it becomes clear that not everyone is telling them the truth.

Critic reviews

"Masterful writing, vivid characters, and a highly imaginative, terrifying, and byzantine plot." ( Booklist on The Tears of Angels)
"If you’re a fan of the police procedural, with a very human protagonist, then this is well worth a look." ( Puzzle Doctor)

Ok but

I did like this story, but I found some of the characters highly annoying, Jennifer is a weak willed idiot who finally, FINALLY does the right thing at the end of the book, but drove me crazy most of the way through, Anderson was behaving in a similar fashion and almost got himself killed so all in all, not a story that puts Police Scotland in a good light, but, all's well that ends well, as they say ... whoever 'they' are ... I also felt that Jock Airde (not sure of that spelling) got a raw deal most of the way through this book.

The narrator, is rather annoying, she has a bit of lisping, weird accent that's not really right for the characters or the region but she's not terrible so she gets three stars.

Tense, a bit terrifying.

The story itself is a cracking good one, but if you have issues about rats, it might not be for you.

Fantastic

Brilliant book from start to finish so much drama and suspence. Could not guess who done it which I think makes a brilliant read

Exactly what it says on the tin - there are Rats!

Enjoyed the story although I felt the ‘loose ends’ where too quickly tied up. Also felt a bit confusing working out the logistics of the main crime area set up etc(not saying more to avoid spoilers). I sped the narrator up to 1.1 as the delivery was a little slow for me. Cathleen has done a decent job taking over from James Macpherson. I’ve followed Anderson and Costello from Absolution.

One of the best

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. The story was a bit gruesome in places (I like crime thrillers but not horror) but it wasn't unnecessarily so. All in all, I found it utterly gripping. The narration was absolutely excellent. If I had to pick holes - the very end seemed a bit rushed and so much of the "who-dunnit" was crammed into a couple of paragraphs it was a little hard to follow. I had to play it back again to get my little grey cells to take it all in! Highly recommended.

Good story

Again not your standard police procedural and a very quick final conclusion but very good nonetheless.

My first Caro

My introduction to Caro’s writing. Her words flow smoothly like the hidden rivers around Glasgow. The twists and turns kept me hooked until the final reveal. Going to read more of her work. Brilliant writer!

Returning this book!

What would have made Rat Run better?

I can't stand the narration, after listening to Macpherson, and getting used to the characters portrayed, this is dreadful the whole persona of the characters has changed for the worse.. The pitch is too high, and not sure which accent she is trying to convey as that changes too, almost with every conversation if you are going to change the narrator change at least use same sex, and similar accent.

Would you ever listen to anything by Caro Ramsay again?

I love Caro Ramsay books normally

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Awful, just really awful.... characters were destroyed. and will not buy if she does narration again.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Couldn't listen to it after a few chapters.

Any additional comments?

Try and match narrators to previous books... tone, sex, accent.

The plot goes slowly down the plughole

Unlikelier and unlikelier ... I think this most unlikely plot so far devised ... perhaps ever. Credibility is stretched till it finally snaps. But not quite. The narrator is excellent as ever and there are all the familiar characters. I think this is an example of an author seeing how far it is possible to go ... it is all a bit much really.
