Summary
The downloadable, digital audiobook edition of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s sensational new thriller, read by the actor Steven Pacey.
Two boys, brothers, wake tied and bound in a boathouse by the sea. Their kidnapper has gone, but soon he will return. Their bonds are inescapable.
But there is a bottle and tar to seal it. Paper and a splinter for writing; blood for ink. A message begging for help.
In Copenhagen’s cold cases division Carl Morck has received a bottle. It holds an old and decayed message, written in blood. It is a cry for help from two boys. Is it real? Who are they and why weren’t they reported missing? Can they possibly still be alive?

It's Not Worth Reading This Review
Honestly, no-one should listen to me in any way when I discuss the Department Q series of audiobooks. I seem to have completely lost my ability to think objectively about them because they seem that good to me. I don't think any other series in this genre has made me more tense for the victims or made me laugh out loud so much as Carl Morck and his crew of misfits have done!
It's a heady mix of cleverly thought out plot lines and rich characters which develop further with every installment. The fact that the lead is a laconic, tired guy disliked by most of his colleagues and is supported by two of the most unusual assistants in detective fiction makes for a wonderful chemistry. Assad and his sayings plus Rose and her moods are brought wonderfully to life by Pacey's superb narration with the long-suffering Morck caught in between! Carl's struggle to assert his authority is a continual source of amusement.
As I say, just don't pay attention to me about these books. To me they are simply perfect and I can't be trusted to review them sensibly :-)

Best Department Q yet!
The best in the Department Q series so far. Not as horrific as the first novel and not as bloated as the second installment. A good mix between humour and tension as we revisit the quirky characters of the Department Q team, some of whom themselves are shrouded in mystery. An old message, written in blood, is found in a bottle floating off the coast of Scotland. Scottish forensics discovers the message is in Danish and the bottle is sent to the Copenhagen Police, where it lands on the large pile of cold cases languishing in Department Q. While the reader knows the back story of the message and that the killer is still at large, the tension builds as the Department Q team slowly piece the story surrounding the message together. The listener waits with abated breath for the team to connect the dots and make the breakthrough and when it happens the pace is taken up a notch with a very tense race against time. An excellent third installment to a very enjoyable series. As always Steven Pacey's narration is superb. I must have made quite a spectacle of myself in traffic, jumping up and down in the car, shouting and waving my fists at the radio! Loved listening to this one.

Best yet!
I was really looking forward to this book and wasn't disappointed...a good solid storyline and a bit more in depth than the other Olsen books I've read. The regular characters come to life more than ever, and the other characters are dark and menacing. I Really didn't. want this book to end...Stephen Pacey does a great job of the narration...thoroughly recommended!

Wow, the best of department Q!!!
After "Mercy" and "Disgrace" this is the third book from Adler-Olsen on department Q and to me it is the best (so far... were are the next ones?). After the second book I wasn't 100% sure whether I would like this, because it felt like the author just tried too much, but here I was hooked nearly from the start. The story was good, the characters are totally great (but kind of crazy) and I couldn't stop listening. Usually when crime stories are this long I get a little bored with it and wait on the outcome, not in this case. The tension kept building up and up.... and not because of twist and turns that were totally unlikely. If you liked the first two books in the series you just have to listen to this! Rose,Assad, Carl and the other characters from the first books get better and better...

More Please,
What did you like most about Redemption?
What a brilliant writer this Jussi Alder-Olsen is, what a great narrator and translation. Wonderful characters, coupled with a story line that sounds believable and the humor that made me laugh out loud . Much more of this author please.
What other book might you compare Redemption to, and why?
Mercy and Disgraced, same core characters
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Any of the office scenes, connection between Carl, Assad and Rose
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I wanted to savor the story so tried to string it out for as long as possible
Any additional comments?
Why did Rose not pass on the message to Carl as to the whereabouts of the boathouse?
The killer was killed too soon.

Just loved it
Would you consider the audio edition of Redemption to be better than the print version?
Yes by far it was well read with thoughtfulness, humour and tragady
Who was your favorite character and why?
Everyone had their own individual personalities that were instantly recognisable and
What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?
I loved it, there were 10 or more characters all shone through with their own personalities, some loathed some loved, all delivered with the same care and attention
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes
Any additional comments?
I just didnt want it to end. I listen to an audio book to and from work every day 3 hrs a day and I did not want the journeys to end

Was it meant to be funny?
I downloaded this based on the high ratings and the fact that it was a crime thriller, which I like. Being a big fan of Jo Nesbo and Stig Larson, I assumed it would be another of that type. The story is excellent and the plot well thought-out, but what ruins the book is the general 'brevity' of the dialogue between the police characters and in the inward thoughts of the main police character. Literally 85% of the non-plot related story was written in an attempt to be funny. I say attempt, because it wasn't funny at all. Perhaps this was a case of lost in translation. The plot deserved the gavitas in general dialogue that authors such as Jo Nesbo or Micheal Connolly would have given to this subject matter. Perhaps is was meant to be funny, but that seems at odds with the plot. Comedy crime thrillers can work as in the case of the Rivers of London series, but for me this didn't. The narrator did a good job with a dodgy 'script'.

Gripping and compelling
The only criticism I have is to me really and my lack of knowledge over the places mentioned, which sort of took the edge off a little but not enough to spoil a good story.

This one's a Wow!
I just reviewed another book where I said it was ok nothing about it made me wow! Having listened to all 3 Jussi Adler-Olsen books for me they are all a wow. The stories are unusual and I'm never completely sure how they're going to end until they do - which is great for me as I always feel that little bit of disappointment when I work out who, what, when way before the end.
Steven Pacey is in my top 3 narrators and he does a great job as usual.
