Summary

The first novel in the Lindsay Gordon series.

Freelance journalist Lindsay Gordon is strapped for cash. Why else would she agree to cover a fund-raising gala at a girls' public school? But when the star attraction is found garrotted with her own cello string minutes before she is due on stage, Lindsay finds herself investigating a vicious murder.

Who would have wanted Lorna Smith Cooper dead? Who had the key to the locked room in which her body was found? And who could have slipped out of the hall at just the right time to commit this calculated and cold-blooded crime?

Awful narrative

Really love Val McDermid books, but the narration of this was so awful I didn’t bother listening to the end.

What happened?

Terrible choice of narrator -accents all over the place when doing characters

I got bored. Skipped half
This isn’t what I expect from a great story teller.
But maybe a different narrator would have helped I normally rate her books at 4/5

First and last

Difficult to believe that this written by Val McDermid. More adolescent fiction than crime -thriller. Narrator is unconvincing. Thankfully I have read other book by this talented author, otherwise this would have been a first and last for me.

Least favourite so far, narration unconvincing

Who narrates an audiobook is key to the story being portrayed convincingly and can be a personal preference too for the listener. Unfortunately the voice grated on me when English accents were used. I did not find Lindsey’s partner’s character or voice had any depth whatsoever. Shame as I’ve always enjoyed Val McDermid books

Can’t believe McDermid wrote this

Sorry Val gave up half way through and returned this book, it was a bit too St Trinians meets Mr Hercule Poitot, just didn’t get it, especially compared to the brilliant Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series.

Not up to Val Mc Dermid’s usual standard

Love Val McDermid’s writing, her use of language, intelligently constructed plots and in-depth research. Clearly a fan. I found this book light weight and was disappointed on so many levels. More ‘chick-lit’ than gritty crime writing. Sorry Ms McD but not one of your best.

Totally unbelievable

This is my first (& probably my last) foray into a Val McDermid novel. Lindsay Gordan is portrayed as a thoughtless, heedless, impetuous woman. I find it totally incredible that someone would do even one of the exploits she went on to do. I do not find the characters entertaining or endearing, so am not tempted to read anymore in this series.

The Narrator is fabulous and deserves 5 stars. The story is not.
