Summary

It is the 1870s, and twin brothers Sean and Garrick Courtney are born into the wilds of Natal. They could not be more different, and fate, war and the jealous schemes of a woman are to drive them even further apart. But as history unfolds, a continent is awakening. And on the horizon is the promise of fortune, adventure, destiny and love....

A proper, unapologetic African adventure

For anyone who loves adventure, history, Africa and the manly call of the wild, then this book is perfect. Wonderfully endearing characters populate a rich and vibrant late nineteenth century South African veldt, lovely brought back to life by Smith eloquent pros. In short it’s a ripping good yarn!

Drama and Layers of Story Telling

A wonderful story of a family and reminders of so many of the places I grew up and saw, especially those in the veld.

You will be thrown back into 19th century Africa

At first I did a wee bit struggle with Sean Barrett voice, being so low-key. But now I will look for more works narrated by him. You feel the characters through his voice; the manly man, the frail mam, the Zulu warrior, the wee boy, the teenage girl, the woman, the posh man... Sean drowns you into the story which Wilbur Smith has written with passion, understanding, humanity and in fit with 19th century South Africa. He is a master in story writing.
When the Lion feed is a journey into life itself with its ups and downs, violence and love, loyalties and be betrayals, friendship and courtship, life and death.
A must read!

Wonderful.

Loved it. Took me right back to South Africa. I've previously read all of Wilbur Smith's books but enjoyed sitting back with eyes closed and listening to Sean Barretts reading aloud of this one.
