About this listen

The second volume in Robin Hobb’s internationally bestselling Farseer series.

We are here Fitz, you and I, to change the future and the world…

Fitz dreams of Red-Ship Raiders sacking a coastal village, leaving not a single man, woman or child alive. Tortured by this terrible vision he returns to the Six Duchies court where all is far from well.

King Shrewd has been struck down by a mysterious illness and King-in-waiting, Verity, spends all his time attempting to conjure storms to confuse and destroy the Red-Ship Raiders. And when he leaves on an insane mission to seek out the mystical Elderings, Fitz is left alone and friendless but for the wolf Nighteyes and the King’s Fool with his cryptic prophesies.

Critic reviews

“Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers … what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics.” (The Times)

“In today’s crowded fantasy market Robin Hobb’s books are like diamonds in a sea of zircons” (George R. R. Martin)

Great story, awful narration

I will be buying the physical copies of these books just so I can enjoy the story without the narrative. The story is fantastic.
It really took me by surprise when his accent turned American. These books could do with a new narrator.

overall i liked this better than the first

Narrator has had a bad rap in some reviews but i kinda liked it and got used to the changes of voice, he reminds me of an posh english pilot types and can see you wll either like ot or hate it,
The story I thought was better than book 1 and can not wait to read the last one, hoping its not an anti climax.

10/10 Narrator 20/10 story.

The narrator's performance is exquisite and brings Hobbs characters and story telling to a life beyond reading the book. If this audio book was a movie then it would be one of the few ones that are better than the book.

Homesick for a time, not a place.

An enjoyable romp through a fantastically built world. Suffers a little of Second-in-a-series syndrome but still worth a read in its own right. Bring on Coast Vs Inland Dutchie Bowl 5000!

This narrator....

Realm of the Elderlings is a fantastic series, love love love the books but my Gods, the narrator is so bad for this trilogy, I am hoping the Liveship series which has a different narrator is more listenable to,

Thrilling

Building on the first book, the second explores even deeper into the protagonist’s life. Everything is an outstanding read, encouraging to read on, and presents an epic journey.

narrated is inconsistent but story good

the narrate is just as frustrating as ever with his terrible fake accent, although it's less jarring 2 books in. I don't see why he changed his voice for Burridge compared to the first, nor why he changed it for Fitz from boy to man mid way through a chapter

Despite having read the book twice already, so much better in audio format.

Cannot rate this high enough. My initial response to the narrator was underwhelming, but after 2 books I can’t imagine anyone else achieving such a good result.
