Summary

The towering story of five families through 100 centuries of turmoil, tyranny, passion and prosperity from Edward Rutherfurd, the author of London, Russka and New York.

In a novel of extraordinary richness the whole sweep of British civilisation unfolds through the story of one place, Salisbury, from beyond recorded time to the present day. The landscape - as old as time itself - shapes the destinies of the five families.

The Wilsons and the Shockleys, locked in a cycle of revenge and rivalry for more than 400 years. The Masons, who pour their inspired love of stone into the creation of Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral. The Porters, descended from a young Roman soldier in exile. And the aristocratic Norman Godefrois, who will fall to the very bottom of the social ladder before their fortunes revive.

A Tour de Force

I read this book when it first came out. I enjoyed it then and I have loved listening to it now. Apart from it being a rattling good story, it is an educational book in the true sense of the word - from the Latin, educo, I lead out. It leads out the reader’s mind, in this instance, to appreciate the myriad lives that have gone before us.

Sarum

The last 12 hours of this book wouldn’t download into my app. I had to listen from My Library on the audible website where there was no sleep function. So a bit frustrating as I like to go to sleep listening to a good book. Amazing historical research about Old Sarum and Salisbury. I enjoyed the characters and threads of families over the generations, especially the very short man and 6-toed fishermen from very early times. I liked the philosophical differences between the Americans and Brits. Very true. Thank you.

Ingenious mix of factual history, fiction and construction.

It enabled one to experience something of people’s lives, thoughts and feelings through the sweep of millennia at key moments in England’s social evolution, told from the perspective of ordinary people.

Long but stick with it

The story of Sarum told as a series of linked vignettes and with a nod to historical accuracy plays out well. Maybe not the most enthralling storylines but its simple narrative wneds its way down through the history timeline with occasional links to predecessors which captures the nature of the people who have lived in the landscape. The links between past, forgotten predecessors is always of interest, Cheddar Man, 12,000 years old and yet he had a direct descendent living 7 miles from where his skeleton was found. It is a hefty commitment but give it go once your into the rhythm of the work it will take you along like the five rivers.
