Summary

Some things are meant to remain in the past.

Dr. Hugh Meyer believed he had created the ultimate miracle. Using the DNA of ancient creatures preserved in the Arctic, he had genetically engineered one of the most remarkable species of sea creature to ever exist: Serpentem Vectem Cel—Serpent Eel. Believed to possess the cure for countless diseases, the creature holds great promise for the medical community.

All goes awry when the beast escapes containment. With a rapid growth rate and remarkable physical evolution, the beast travels to the coastal town of Spiral Bay. There, the creature designed to save human life instead starts taking it.

Fishing vessels are found wrecked, paddleboaters mysteriously disappear, and large whales turn up dead. Realizing his creation has become Mankind's worst nightmare, Hugh Meyer must join forces with the local police chief, a skillful mechanic, and a rich reality show star to bring the Serpent's rampage to a dead halt.

Needs more action less romance

The story was good but would of been better if there was more monster and less romance

Exactly what it should be

The story is a fun, gory, easy to follow and most of all a nice brake from some heavy boring reading. Performance was perfect as always.

More of the Same please Mr Cole

Genuinely awful

Where to start? This is an absolutely terrible book. The writing is excruciating to the point of sometimes actually making no sense and is very heavy on repetition - ‘the vicious serpent viciously raised its vicious head showing huge vicious teeth’ - which is not an anomaly but throughout the text. Was this manuscript ever even read over by someone else, never mind edited? Even the narrator, who does his utmost, is audibly caught out by the dreadful writing. As to the plot, the author for some insane reason, decided to do a mash up of a deep sea adventure with a Mills & Boon romance, severely hampered by his complete inability to write female characters. Obviously as this is a pulp novel, we don’t expect deep characterisation, but the extended and incredibly tedious romance theme is absolutely cringemaking. Had the writer concentrated on a sea monster adventure and found himself an editor - perhaps attended some writing classes - this would have been a fun listen. As it is, it makes one wonder how on earth it got published, never mind considered for an audio book. A must avoid.
