Summary
Few bands are as shrouded in the murky haze of rock mythology as The Doors, and parsing fact from fiction has been a virtually impossible task. But now, after fifty years, The Doors' notoriously quiet guitarist is finally breaking his silence to set the record straight.
Through a series of vignettes, Robby takes listeners back to where it all happened: the pawn shop where he bought his first guitar; the jail cell he was tossed into after a teenage drug bust; his parents' living room where his first songwriting sessions with Jim Morrison took place; and the many concert venues that erupted into historic riots. Both a time capsule of the 1960s counterculture and a moving reflection on what it means to find oneself as a musician, Set the Night on Fire is a must-hear for Doors fans and an essential volume of American pop.

Best of the Doors biographies
I enjoyed this book hugely. I have read all the previous autobiographies of the band and many of the various biographies of Jim Morrison. This to my mind is by far the best, giving a balanced and level-headed rendition of The Doors story. Of course, I am a fan of their music and have been since 1968 and so the subject matter is of interest to me. If you are not a fan then I suspect that this book will be hard going to make sense of as it jumps around a good deal. This did not trouble me at all and I quickly acclimatised, but someone new to the story of the band would struggle a bit.
The book is extremely well written, and the narrator excellent. He manages to convey Robby’s emotions and thoughts as if it was him speaking.
The Robby Krieger that comes across is far more of a rebel than his shy, retiring guitarist image back in the day would have you believe. I learned a good deal more about Robby than I knew before. He has made a mess of his life at times, but then haven’t we all since those heady days. He is wise enough to be grounded in the knowledge that success comes with equanimity and learning the lessons that life brings along.
For me, the one failing this book possesses is that like other autobiographies of accomplished musicians I have read, it does not address the compulsion to play music. In the book Robbie describes how Ray was unable to pass a piano without sitting down to play it. Robbie says that he understands Ray’s drive to play but unfortunately he does not explain himself further. I think that this is a shame because with this knowledge to hand it would enable one to break on through.

story jumps around a lot and leaves a few gaps here and there. I liked that it was narrated by the author.

Likeable and informative.
I enjoyed this. I've been a fan of The Doors for many, many years and this seems to be as unsensationalised and honest as any book about them could be, even if you make allowances for the fact that every man is the hero of his own autobiography.
Also a really nice touch having the photos available as a PDF, I just wish I'd noticed before I finished the book.
Well worth a listen.

Really enjoyed this honest look back at his life
It jumps about a bit but I really enjoyed the pacing. Robbie has enjoyed his life and is very honest about his struggles and it is an entertaining listen for it. The last chapter could be read at his funeral and it bought a tear to my eye. Great listen for any The doors fans out there.

Outstanding
I'd just finished (and enjoyed) 'Jim Morrison' by Stephen Davis so moved onto this book by Robby Kreiger. It's better.
A first-hand account of his journey with and without the Doors. He's honest, it's not an ego trip and he writes with humour. I laughed out loud more than once.
Highly recommended.
