Great collection of short horror stories!
I was really looking forward to this collection and I was not disappointed! This I believe was also due to the amazing narration by Aaron Camacho. The voice's depth added to the mystery and horror.
Each story felt very particular and the whole collection felt very diverse, making me wonder what I'd be surprised with next.
Out of the 9 stories I loved The Bandit's son, Bird's Eye, The Selected, Oneiric and Letters to Santa.
I really liked the sense of nostalgia and warmth at the beginning of every story which are then squashed in cold blood and without any remorse, leaving the reader to pick up the pieces.
Probably in contrast with some opinions, I very much enjoyed the ending which left me wanting for more but at the same time leaving me to wonder in each story's universe a little longer in my head.
I really recommend this collection of very well crafted short horror stories!
Thanks to the author and the narrator for the opportunity to listen to it and this is my honest opinion.

Brilliant collection
A great set of stories from an excellent horror author. John Durgin has followed up two fantastic novels with this short story collection. Can't wait to read more of his work.

Love it!
Great collection of chilling tales, that helped me NOT sleep on my camping holiday! The narrator did a wonderful job as well, highly recommended this audiobook, and John’s other books, ‘The cursed among us’ and ‘inside the devils nest’.
Looking forward to reading more from this author!

A chilling collection that packs a nasty bite
I'm been a big fan of Durgin's novels, The Cursed Among Us and Inside The Devil's Nest, so I was looking forward to reading his short stories and seeing how he would approach them. I wasn't disappointed. Sleeping In The Fire is very solid collection, with a fair few stories that I found to be great.
This is a varied collection, taking in the wild west, theme park rides, deep sea terror, medical/borderline sci-fi in Oneiric, and even manages to extract horror from the idea of a child's request to Father Christmas. I find some collections can begin to feel a little repetitive, whether narratively or thematically, but this was deftly avoided here.
I listened to an audiobook copy, and Aaron Camacho did a strong job providing narration. It's never easy for one narrator to vary their performance across so many different stories, and bring so many characters to life, but I thought it was done admirably here. Camacho makes this audiobook an easy recommendation for anyone looking to get into Durgin's work, or for anyone who simply wants to listen to some chilling and dark tales.
