Summary

From the author of the million-copy best-selling The Girl with All the Gifts comes an extraordinary new psychological thriller with a twist you won't see coming....

There are two sides to every story....

Liz Kendall wouldn't hurt a fly. Even when times get tough, she's devoted to bringing up her kids in a loving home. But there's another side to Liz, one that's dark and malicious. An alter ego that will do anything to get her way - no matter how extreme. And when this other side of her takes control, the consequences are devastating.

Someone Like Me is the intoxicating new thriller from the phenomenal M. R. Carey. A modern take on the Jekyll and Hyde tale, think Gone Girl meets Stephen King - but you won't have heard anything quite like this before....

What Ya Gonna Read? Genre-Busters!

When you love a book but by the end find yourself struggling for ways to describe it you know you've read something special. Ever since Carey broke into my awareness by taking one of my favourite genres and literally breaking the mould with The Girl With All The Gifts this has been an author I've wanted to follow. This is another one bursting with imagination and it is going to draw comparisons with all sorts of authors, none of which will quite capture its essence. I feel that if I described one of the major characters a significant portion of people would probably stop right there and decide to give it a miss. Hell, I was a bit nonplussed as things went on but by halfway through I was rooting for all of them and that character became my favourite!

Much like Fellside this one doesn't seem too concerned about falling into a particular genre: psychological thriller, supernatural, and maybe some horror. Carey is a writer for whom boundaries seem to mean very little. He builds his stories, taking his time where it's needed, meaning both his characters and plots have a genuine solidity and depth about them. I really cared about what happened to Liz and the other characters her family got involved with.

Of the narration, I wasn't convinced by Robin Miles at the start, occasionally her relatively clipped tones and maybe a little lack of inflection in some narrative phrases jarred slightly. However, given how utterly immersed I became later I'll have to concede she did an extremely fine job.

This is a little different so obviously quite how much it draws a reader in will depend on the individual, all I can say is that if do you tune into it you're likely to feel like being fairly anti-social until you've finished it all!

One last thing, I would definitely avoid reviews of this one that try to summarise the plot or give any of the game away. Just like The Girl With All The Gifts this one unfolds beautifully and is much better as a true voyage of discovery!

Another clever story....

I had so been looking forward to this audible. well worth the wait.
I did take a little time to get into this one, but was glad I stuck with it. The narrator took a bit of getting used to.
great characters. As always with M R Carey the story line is gripping & pure escapism.

Great story, poorly read

I'm a big fan of M.R. Carey's stories. Well thought out and pull you in, but I struggled with this due to one reason, the reading was very poor.

Inflection was off key and her interpretation of characters was very poor. it actually detracted from a good story. I would not listen to a book read by Robin Miles again for this fact.

Started out ok got bit silly

An insight into mental illness, yes.
But way too drawn out with unnecessary detail,
Last third was painful too be honest, might work as a movie in my opinion, but as an audiobook? It just made no sense to me.
Hours of conversation with oneself.
Exhausting

Awesome

Again M R Carey has delivered a tense exciting mentally stimulating glimpse of a worlds or worlds that are tantalisingly familiar and yet a little disturbing.
A story told with sharp insight and managing g to tie up a number of threads, answering questions and offering possibilities with his creations.
A heart listen .
Author and narrator delivers a great audio.

Bizarre narration

A very enjoyable book from an author I enjoy, almost ruined by the narrator's terrible stilted delivery and odd emphasis choices. she sounds like Siri doing a bad impression of William Shatner.

Brilliant so much more than the synopsis

This is about a woman going through physical abuse BUT A so much much too
It’s also about a young girl (14 ish) who went through a horrific ordeal when she was 6.
Both lives collide in a jaw dropping way. It’s si fi shodingers cat in a listen in one go page turner
Highly recommended give it a try you can alway return it I don’t want to add spoilers.
So glad I chose it
Narration is BRILLIANT 10/10 ditto the book
Ps not like her previous books I think that’s important to note as many people will have been turned off.she really is a great writer!!! Personally loved all her books

Poor follow up novel.

The Girl With All The Gifts was one of my favorite reads, they made a mess of the movie, never know why they feel the need to mess about with an excellent story.
This book on the other hand was poorly written and extremely childish.
Won't spoil it if you want to give it a try but I for one was extremely disappointing.

Honestly ? utterly boring.

There is a great idea here, an evil alter ego gradually taking over a life. But the execution of the story was very poor indeed.
I listened for about an hour, thinking maybe it was the narrator Who was at fault, well she wasn’t great, but she was struggling to make a dull book interesting.
I gave up an returned for a refund.

Meh!

Absolutely loved The Girl With All The Gifts but got as far as 6 hours to go and just couldn’t take any more! It just goes on and on and on with not much happening! Really enjoyed it to start with but once I found it was no longer holding me I knew it was pointless. Maybe the end is amazing and would have saved it but I just could get there! I wasn’t keen on the last book either so maybe this author should stick to what he’s good at? Sorry but a return for me!
