About this listen
"He saw a bare arm first, the hand palm up with fingers curled inwards. Then he stopped and took a few breaths. He could hear the two constables making arrangements before they separated, one saying he'd bring the other some tape from the car, and then it was just the summer morning quiet again."
Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder.
As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision, and another member of the CID team will find herself facing an unexpected challenge. And Smith? Gone but not forgotten? Surely, he would say, you cannot write me off with a worn-out cliche like that....

Attention holding
Not too visceral. Nice touches of humour. Starts slowly but picks up pace. Will certainly read others by Peter Grainger.

Excellent continuation of the series
I’m not entirely sure why this “episode” is classed as a new series, but to follow the DC Smith series, this is the next to listen to. Great to hear his old team at work in their new roles. Downloading the next one now!

Very enjoyable
The characters are starting to feel like old friends now. Good plot (even though I'd worked out most of it early on) & the story has a good pace and lots of parts that make you smile or even laugh out loud.
Narrator is easy to listen to. All in all an excellent book choice.

Too Good
I get a bit emotional when recommending the DC Smith books. I can't believe how well written and narrated they all are. I feel part of the family almost....invested. I want to work with them, live in the same village as them and be bonded to them.

Wonderful story
There was a surprise for those who have read the earlier book. I enjoyed the narrator’s voice and characters.

Love the characters
I have enjoyed all these DC books. They are a comfortable listen, gentle, but great plots that keep me hooked. I can see the characters and relationships onfolding, and where things take place. Sometimes I feel that's too slow ... but it's not, and works well in my opinion.

A Sensitive Inclusion of Downs Syndrome
I loved this book. The characters are so well defined and I found myself in Water's shoes from the very beginning. For a long time I was worried that DC was only going to be referred to as a character from the past, so it was wonderful when he made an appearance. Including such a well-researched story line involving a boy with Downs Syndrome was excellent, and I learned so much.

Superb
Another wonderfully satisfying listen. The story is excellent and narration spot on. It’s told sensitively and with humour. A book I didn’t want to end.
