Summary

A laugh-out-loud, action-packed space adventure series from the author critics are calling "the unholy offspring of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett".

When petty criminal Cal Carver is locked in a cell with a deranged, semi-naked cannibal, he suspects his life has hit its lowest point. He is mistaken.

Abducted by aliens and whisked across the galaxy, Cal is thrown into a team of misfits and criminals and sent on a top secret mission for the president of Space. And that's when everything starts to go very, very wrong....

This bundle collects the first three best-selling adventures of Cal Carver and the crew of the dread ship Shatner, by multi-award-winning author Barry J. Hutchison:

A surprising gem

I didn't expect to love this series when I originally took a chance on it. All I can say now is that I'm glad I did. It's one of the funniest book series I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. I'd highly recommend this to anyone interested in a non-serious yet still kinda heartfelt series.

Awesome

Absolutely loved it. I listen while at work with my headphones on. So I have looked a complete idiot standing there laughing most of the day. Good story narrated really well. I have got some serious listening to do with the rest of the books.

Totally Brilliant.

I purchased this book as I was looking for a new author. This book was recommended as "If you like Terry Pratchett you'll love this."
Tbh I decided that I didn't like the main character within 2minutes of listening. However I decided to stick it out and see how things went. By chapter 2 or 3 I was completely captivated and couldn't wait for my next opportunity to listen. Within a few months I have devoured all of the follow up books in this series.
The humour is fabulous and the science'y bits are few, and don't require a degree to understand. In fact they are written as if a human idiot such as myself can follow with ease.
Well written and narrated brilliantly.
As an avid Pratchett fan I can honestly say I think Barry J Hutchison is on par, if not better.

Note to Barry - Write faster! 😁

Space paced space fun.

The Sidekick's initiative was my introduction to Barry J Hutchinson's work. Much like that and Phil's narration, nothing dissapoints.

Bored after half an hour and it doesn't get better

This book starts off with a severely obnoxious and childish protagonist, but then does a really fascinating trick (It's subtle, so you may miss it): It proceeds to never, ever, EVER, even slightly, waver AT ALL, from doubling down on this IDIOTIC, fucking JABBERING FOOL of a protagonist, as he falls and ricochets his way across the Universe, learning nothing along the way. In dedicating itself to its own internal nonsense it manages to remove any shred of importance on any of its events, because literally every scene is the guy going "Huh" and "Oh shiny", and the solution is always to let this random fool who cracks lame jokes and knows nothing bumble his way out of it again.

Douglas Adams this ain't.

Decent Book

The narration is good, story is alright, nothing fantastic. I got the Collected Adventures Volume 1, 3 books in one. I wouldn't buy any of these individually. If you see it listed in a deal, get it. If you're bored and need an listen but can't find anything, Spend a credit.
